Earl's fantastic stove and thread is why I have alerts on search engines for them, among others.

Earl's stove is from the 200 series and much more ornate than the 415

I had a bad feeling that this dilemma might keep You up at night. As We head toward Winter, one could only be so fortunate to have the problem You're facing ! :dancing:

Perhaps You can choose a little easier if You can get one outright, and try to cut a deal on the other over a defined time period. A rare situation to have,I know, but it depends on the seller, and how many bites they've had on the unit. I know,I know, they're both calling You ! Good Luck,my Friend ! :help:

yes, the Laurel is a direct draft Oak variant, the Favorite is a base heater w/ double heater and the mica is amazing at releasing heat so just gravy over the rest.
I'd say base heater. You've already been down this road and proven the advantages. You can add sheet metal to the back to make a double heater easier than making a base heater. Or, it's possible that the efficiency of the base heater would offset the cost of a small fan to increase hot air circulation.

Example;
In the coldest parts of winter, I supplement the coal heat with electric plenum in my furnace. I just added my electric bills for the past several years. Last winter I put a 6 inch fan on the trivet shelf behind the range blowing over the firebox end, into the kitchen toward the center of the house. I had noticed the electric heat came on less often and for less duration. I ran the range a bit harder then I did the year before and went through at least a 1/2 ton more coal. So I wanted to see how the numbers compared to more coal and a 6 inch fan going 24/7, but less furnace heat needed.

Last winter compared to the two previous winters, my electric bills are down averaging $200.00 each of the coldest months when the electric heat is used .

So, a small fan saved me far more than the electricity needed to run it. And I know that having a base heater saves me on coal. That's why I bought the #6 when I already had a larger oak. ;)

HB,

if only it was that big a problem !! unfortunately, there can only be one and price / condition pretty much dictates that it be the Favorite.

you may have noticed that the factory paint on the inside of the combustion chamber is hardly dusty much less burnt. that stoves appearance conditions are by and large the result of having been sold and re sold and sitting around for yrs on end. I can't imagine stumbling onto a better example at an attainable price point.

I seem to remember that when you were building the last base heater, one of the requirements was to be able to see the fire glow from various points in the room.

Well, if that's still on the list, you've got one choice that meets that to an incredible degree while, as William would say, "Sipping coal". ;)

WOW! I wish I had a home that I could put one of those in. New style ranch home....the only place I could put one would be the living room and I don't know if it would heat the rest of the house or not. I guess I can dream! :D

With a heat monster like that, you'd be glad to have those cooler areas in the house as a place to go to cool off before heat stroke sets in. :D

When we're doing canning on the range in the middle of winter, we're in tee shirts and drinking ice water to help cool off. Even at that, whenever possible we take breaks to go sit in cooler parts of the house.

Standing around that much cast iron that's pushing out heat down low to the floor starts to feel like it's baking almost as much outside the oven as it does inside.

Don't know how the gals could stand hours of cooking back in the days of layers of corsets and petty coats.

How dose the Favorite compare to lets say a G6 heat wise.
The Favorite is by far the more eye catching.

And you have a question as to which would be better,.... the oak double heater verses a mica base heater ?

To quote a more modern form of Shakespeare, ....... "Cry havoc and loose the dogs of heat output !!!" :D
