Today I fired it up in the driveway. Sure glad I did... at first I thought it was leaking smoke from all seams, but it settled down so I guess it was fumes from the paint and furnace cement baking off. It sure would have stunk up the cabin! I'm happy to report that the stainless steel tube conducts heat just fine, can't see any difference at all. Not surprising as it's so thin, and the the thermal conductivity of stainless is still orders of magnitude better than that of air. I'm looking forward to a chilly warm night at the cabin this weekend.

Back in place. Just as effective as it's ever been, even with a minimal coal load and damped down as far as it would go I had to open a window last night (30°F outside).
