On our hunting expedition yesterday, we ran across my brothers hideaway in the Northern Maine Woods. As we exited this quaint secret spot, we were exposed to one of natures delicacies: a moose. However, without a tag and out of season, we only shot a few photos for our memoirs.

Mooseleuk lake dam: In 1990 this dam was built to control the water levels in the lake. The benefit is two fold; to maintain quality habitat for waterfowl and trout. Take note of the fish ladder on the dam, allowing them to freely move from the lake to the stream.

This is my son with the first "ditch" chicken (partridge/grouse) of the day yesterday. The birds are plentiful this year and very tasty as well.

Nice. I grew up next to wetlands when the south shore of LI still had some. Nice to see other DU projects at work besides just buying up wetlands. Makes me glad I support DU. ;)

"Ditch chicken" is a Northern Mainer's slang for game birds that live along the edge of woods roads in the ditch; specifically the grouse in our area do this in the early mornings and late evenings to sun themselves and get grit for their gullet.

I don't do any of the shooting myself anymore...I let my boys go for it because I know the adrenaline rush of being successful on your hunt and the reward of having game meat for meals. Hell, I don't even drive them around anymore when we hunt...I go along so I can take pictures and relax. :D
