Does anyone know of any dealers who have red ash coal? Had some a couple years ago and really liked it the dealer I used no longer carries it. I live in upstate NY.

What particular attributes did you like about it? Red ash coal generally forms large clinkers more readily than white ash. Other than that, I can't think of any significant differences.

You can get red ash coal with high carbon and low volatiles that is harder to light and maintain (but should have a we bit more BTU's), or you can get it with lower carbon and higher volatiles (and a smidge less BTU's), and the latter may be easier for some stoves (or stove operators) to handle. But ditto all of this for white ash coal.

The red ash I had burned hotter and more completely. The coal I have now seems to have a lot of unburned pieces left over in the ash. They just look like black rocks if broken open they still have that sheen like coal.It is a Alaska stoker burner. I put a chimney thermometer on the front of my stove to check temperature red ash was twenty to thirty degrees hotter on same setting as other coal I tried blaschak and reading coal to compare. Wrote settings coal brand and temperature on side of stove with soap stone for a whole winter.

Where do you live? It would be easier if we knew that.
