I was planning on buying a hand fed furnace, specially a hitzer, but I came across a great deal on a power vent keystoker 90. I met with the guy and looked it over, and have decided to purchase it. It has the added on duct take off to hook into an existing hvac system, a bigger blower, power venter with all the pipe and connections I could ever need to hook it up.

Very excited to get it installed and running, unfortunately he left last night to head up north for hunting and won't be back until Tuesday.
Stayed tuned!

It's in excellent condition, he really took great care of it. It's only been burned in a few seasons, he used to two to heat his whole house, but bought a bigger coal furnace off a friend that will do the work of both of them.

Really excited about the thermostat control, will be nice to be able to somewhat control the temp in the house, of course I'll have to cranked to at least 75 when im home. :D

Nice score, maybe hooked up by Turkey day, or the following weekend?

There's a picture of it. Forgot to mention that the power venter is brand new, the coaltrol was rebuilt by keystoker and it was just serviced.

Might be a stupid question, is unhooking the power venter as simple as removing the unit and disconnecting the wires?

Has anyone built a return box around their blowers to tap into the return side of the hvac system? My air handler is in the same room as the furnace, it sits on top of a plywood box which acts as the return plenum. I could easily remove the front side of the plywood box to open up all the returns to floor level in the basement, in theory by natural convection and pressure, the cool air should find its way down to the basement through the return ducting, but a direct line to the blower would work better.

Yes, the power vent is just a plug device/motor. 2 wires or plug to unhook it or hook it up, if have the coal trol, should be a special outlet for the power venter, if not, just plug it in to a regular outlet.

Depending on the size of your house and blower size, it may or may not satisfy your needs. Doens't hurt to try tho. you will loose a good amount heat on the sides. so your basement will be warm, if have open stairway or something, just leave the door open and heat rises.

I use 2 stoves, and old keystoker 90K like yours and a Leisure Line Hyfire to heat this old 1890 victorian.

Good luck, keep us posted.

I have a finished basement so I want it heated. I have an old hand fired stove down there now and it worked well at heating the whole house, now I'll have it blowing straight into the ductwork so it should help a lot more. Time will tell

My house is only 1200 sq ft with 900 finished down stairs.

The stove will be closest to the living room and bedrooms, so they should stay warm, the coldest parts will be the kitchen and dining room which isn't a problem for me.

sounds good! you shouldn't have a problem then.

My Keystoker is 15 years old, bottom power vent, but works great. I've only had to replace the Combustion blower, thats it. I must have forgot to oil it at one time, it seized up but did eventually get it working again. had a spare blower I bought years ago, but was a bit louder then OEM one.

Always do your springtime maintenance on them, they will last.

I'm so stoked for this stoker.... Sorry had to make a joke haha.

But in all seriousness I'm excited to get it installed and burning, it looks like winter weather is finally starting to set in. I've been using just my heat pump, and it has a hard time getting caught up over night even with the lows only being in the high 30s. It doesn't have an electric coils, its just the heat pump, it has done well so far, they just aren't very good at recovering temps, it does a great job at keeping temps though.

I have a credit with an oil company so I think i'm going to use it to get some free oil, and then I need to get my oil boiler hooked up to a power vent. I probably should hook it up to the chimney and just give it a start up and make sure everything is okay with it just in case.

I'm going to add a coal bin in the basement to hold at least two ton of coal, carrying two buckets of coal downstairs every day actually does get a little tiring haha.

I have left over fiber board so I am going to cut a damper plate to block off the air handler from the duct work to keep all the air going in the right direction. I'm going to remove one of the sides of the return plenum so hopefully it will naturally allow air to find its way down through the return system.

Before I put the hvac system in I had cut two openings in the floor one in the bed room and one in the living room, these were the rooms above the stove, I ran flex duct down to the floor, and always left the basement door open. If you put your hand at the end of the flex you could actually feel the cold air flowing out in just by natural convection, I never had a problem either, my house pretty well stayed the same temp.

Hopefully i'll pick the stove up Tuesday evening if he gets home early enough. Luckily he has a walk out basement with a garage door, so it will be easy street wheeling it out there onto a trailer. Now at my house however... I have a whole flight of stairs to the basement, but at least its going down. :D I will have to get my old stove up out of there at some point, I'm going to restore it and set it up in the living room upstairs just in case we ever had an extended power failure.

Next springs project is to add exterior stairs into the basement!

Do you already have rice coal on hand for the stoker?

I'm going to go get a couple buckets of rice on tomorrow. I don't want to buy a large amount until I actually get the stove, just in case something falls through with the deal.

I think in the spring i'm going to take our dump truck up north and get a load of coal, its much cheaper then around here.

Your going to like the 90. It's a very simple straight forward stove that puts out heat and then some more. Just make sure there is no tramp material in the coal as it will block the feed at the bottom of the hopper. I had a client one time that said his fire kept going out. I checked it and saw cigarette ash around the hopper area.

I asked him if he cracked the door on the stove and then had an "indoor smoke" which he hesitated and said yes. I asked him if he disposed of the butts in the hopper which he did. I scooped out the rice coal into several buckets and found about a half a pack of butts and filters lodged in the hopper throat.

I told him if he was going to smoke and not go outside than at least flush the butts.

Nothin going in there but rice coal. I think its going to do very well at heating the house, the only rooms that may have trouble are the kitchen and dining, they are on the opposite ends of the house.

Next spring I'm going to restore my arrow stratford stove and it will be my living room show piece/ back up heat.

I'm bummed that I have to wait until tues or wens to get the stove, I like that its versatile to, can be used as a standalone or tie into the ductwork. I'm not sure where I want to mount the thermostat at yet. I just finished hanging drywall on half my basement ceiling, but I should be able to get the wire fished up to the hallway where my heat pump thermostat is. I didn't look much into how the thermostat is hooked up, but I know on the coaltrol side it has an ethernet plug, I assume the thermostat has the same plug? I already have coaxle and ethernet ran to two place in my living room, so I might just put the thermostat in there. All the coaxle and ethernet goes to the utility room where the stove will be.
