Coaltrol Temp

Coaltrol temp

PostBy: xandrew245x On: Wed Dec 14, 2016 8:40 pm

My coaltrol thermostat seems to be 3-4 degrees off my regular thermostats. This is making it difficult to actually get the desired temperature in my house. Today I came home to my entire house being less than 67 degrees when the coaltrol was set at 71 and the temp was 72 on the thermostat. I even checked this to a thermostat right beside it, my thermostat was reading 67. I know the coaltrol has an adjusted setting, and on mine I can not access the biased ratio. I tried resetting but it didn't change anything with the adjusted temp.

I have tried that, it ends up reaching that temp with no problem while the rest of the house is still not at the correct temp then starts to back off feed, it holds temp on that thermostat for a really long time, when it should actually be calling for heat. It just doesn't seem like it is actually reading temperature and temperate change correctly.

Are you saying that if you set the coaltrol for 75* it will still only go to 67* ?

No, what seems to happen is, if I set it to say 75, the coaltrol thermostat seems to get up to 75 fairly quick, but then holds there for a while. This means it starts to back down the feed rate. The house starts dropping in temp, as I have seen first hand by looking at the other thermostats, but the coaltrol will still be reading 75, and feed rate continues to drop. Then it finally will drop a degree and it will start bumping up the feed rate, but at this point its behind a good bit then takes forever to catch back up, usually resulting in it being under temp in the mornings.

Make sure there is good airflow around the thermostat, make sure the hole on the top is not blocked. might depend on the location from the other thermostats?

Did you find the HLF setting?

it may be too far away from your heat source, your house cools down fast? coal take time to respond, sometimes you will get small temp swings.

There is a "compensation" or bias setting in the advanced setup to tweak the temperature up/down, mine was a couple degrees off from my Gas Furnace and other Digital thermostat.

Read thru the CoalTrol V3 Settings it explains all the settings.

As I recall, the control learns as it goes along. Maybe it just needs time to adjust. It's been a few years since I had mine running.

Sounds to me like the coaltrol is in the warmest room of the house
Try closing some registers near it & open the registers in the cool areas.
No matter what the name is on a thermostat,it can't tell room temp of a room 25' away.

Mine does not have the bias setting in the advanced menu, I've checked through it multiple times.

The register is closed in this room, its the dining room, which is the furthest room from the stove. I stuck one of my honeywell thermostats that I bought right beside it, its reading 70 degrees while the coaltroal is reading 73.

I have a thermostat in my living room, hallway and bedroom, plus I had an extra one that I use to check temps of different rooms.

Just checked it again, it is now showing 75, while the other honeywell is still 70

There is a calibration in the advanced menu. The newer thermostats you just calibrate by tapping up or down till you get the correct temp. The older thermostats are done at TB 130 is default. Its in the manual.

Flyer, I have looked through the entire advanced menu and haven't been able to change the adjusted temp. It seems to have balanced itself out a bit since I first posted, it seems to be only about 1 degree off now.

Depending on the software version , once your in the bias setting, you tap the up or down like 5 times to change 1 degree, so it's pretty sensitive and you have try a few taps, let it calibrate and settle out, and then check it.

Yep just figured that out, you have to press it 5 times to get what degree changes, I got it solved now. Thanks guys!
