I just wanted to share a couple of my coal related Christmas presents. A new pair of gloves and knee pads. The gloves are by Welders Trust and give good protection of the forearms. Today was the first time I ever used knee pads and I'm really liking them. I'm on my knees quite a lot thru the tending ritual with a rough concrete floor and they have been sore lately. Till now I would just fold up a cardboard box to use as a knee cushion. It worked okay until ya wanna move around, it would be a hassle always shifting around to move the cardboard cushion. The knee pads are definitely better and I'm sure they're better for my knees.
I highly recommend a set of construction grade knee pads for tending with a rough concrete floor. These pads have gel filled cushions and have open straps so you don't need to put your foot thru them, very convenient putting on and taking off.
I hope everyone had a nice Christmas! Feel free to display your coal related gifts

I made sure everyone saw my gloves with the hole in the finger patched with duct tape but no one took the hint. I'll go to TS tomorrow and buy myself a late Christmas present, new welding gloves. I don't need knee pads. I got rid of the box stove and replaced it with a Flirt antique stove. I don't have to get on my knees to tend it.

Merry Christmas all. I recently bought a garden kneel pad from Amazon (search Bosneeleze) and find that it is great for tending a coal stove. Not fun kneeling on a tile floor, but this pad makes it easy and no requirement to strap on knee pads. Various colors available on one side; black on the other. Relatively soft on outer surfaces, but a much more firm inner layer so you have a perfect combination on something soft to kneel on, but not something so soft you "kneel through" to the hard floor.
Also, I recommend searching for one of these in the Warehouse Deals section of Amazon. I found a "used" one that had some cosmetic damage. $8 sure beat the regular price of about $20. When it arrived, it was structurally fine, but more damaged than had been advertised--small slit on one side, enduring stain on the other. I repaired the slit with duct tape and the stain seemed to fade over the next few days. At my request, Amazon credited me for entire purchase price. Such a deal....

Next year I would ask Santa for a stove that doesn't require kneeling on the floor...maybe even a stoker.Lightning wrote: I'm on my knees quite a lot thru the tending ritual with a rough concrete floor and they have been sore lately.

Outstanding Lee!!!!!!!!!!
Didn't Lee help his neighbor get his stoker going, he may have been bit by the stoker bug and just doesn't realize it yet!Rob R. wrote:Next year I would ask Santa for a stove that doesn't require kneeling on the floor...maybe even a stoker.
Knee pads not needed here but I do like those gloves ya got!
I was less subtle...I took a sharpie and outlined the ads in the harbor freight circular for the boxes of gloves , rags & disposable paint brushes. HF is useful for these kinds of cheap disposables.biggerpatterson wrote:I made sure everyone saw my gloves with the hole in the finger patched with duct tape but no one took the hint.
I was surprised with the gift of the little magnetic dish I can put the bolts, nuts and washers in so I don't spend half the repair time looking for what I dropped on the floor.

Thank you for all the replies.
When I first got the Clayton I told myself that it would be a stepping stone to a Stoker. It's definitely in my sights for the near future.Rob R. wrote: Next year I would ask Santa for a stove that doesn't require kneeling on the floor...maybe even a stoker.
Yep and he's been really happy with it. I just wish he would have come to me before the purchase. He paid $2300 for a brand new unit that's a free stander and doesn't tie into his duct work. He could have got so much more with a second hand unit for that money.titleist1 wrote: Didn't Lee help his neighbor get his stoker going, he may have been bit by the stoker bug and just doesn't realize it yet!

I raised my stove 16 inches off the floor what kneeling? When you get old you get either lazy or smart. I could raise the stove once or kneel twice a day for four months. Math is your friend..LOL

A lady friend I helped over the summer gave me this gardening bench. It works great for tending the stove. The handles give you something to push against for either lowering yourself or getting back up. It has made my stove tending much easier now. I just keep it near the stove now.
