Ash is fusing on grate WL-110

Ash is fusing on grate WL-110

PostBy: jpd989 On: Sun Jan 01, 2017 4:26 pm

Hello
I have been having a problem with the ash coming off the grates. It fuses together and comes off in large chunks , almost even a sheet. This has caused the ash to pile up in the front of the ash pan. Which in turn hinders the advance of the coal feed and causes the fire to die. This is a new problem since I started burning Reading rice coal. I have been using this boiler nearly 5 years and never had this problem. Is there anything I can do to lessen this problem? Also what size gasket is needed to replace the grate gasket and the ash door, and clean out door.
Thank You and Happy New Year
John

You should have nearly a full grate of fire when the stoker runs for 30 minutes or so. If you do not, you are likely using too much combustion air (assuming the feed rate is high enough for your demand) - which creates clinkers and reduces efficiency.

If you are running the stove hard rice coal that's on the small size or has fines in it will fuse. Try running some buck or mixing buck with the rice and adjust the air. Too much air is not always a good thing.

Thank for your replies. I have the original combustion fan on the boiler. There is no cover for the fan. I will be replacing the fan soon, purchased a new model last week that comes with the cover. I will also go through the feed set up according to the manual. I will also try adding some buck to the hopper.
Thank you

I have never heard of such a thing on a stoker. The new fan w/ cover should allow you to really dial things in.

My ~6 year old Pocono (pre-110K) never had a cover on the combustion intake. It likely has less cfm compared to a 110K.

Have only burnt Blaschak & Kimmels coal with preference Kimmels . No cake though the feed is never full bore.

Interesting discussion here...... good to know......

Well, you can still get the burn correct without the fan cover, but it may require setting the feed rate higher than you need.

You can make a cover for your old fan or put tape over the opening or maybe a sheet magnet to block the intake air.
