Outstanding on the tanks BB. I used to have 2 125 gall. tanks 1 fresh & 1 salt--as far as all the didactic crap on the salt--I would just knock the built up salt on the top edges back into the tank--The fish understood---get tough or die. It worked well!!

the coal burns in the hopper so I would think the same amount of coal is burning. I just wonder if the air flow around the hopper allows for more heat transfer or changes the amount of draft required for the same energy output.

Im not sure on the other hopper stoves, but if I had a fireplace with a 503 in it, I would not use a hopper if it was in a living room. Just too darned pretty to look at and whats a few pounds of coal when I could look at the fire.

I have a Hitzer 50-93 with hopper and here is what I have found. the hopper is "high" enough that you still get a nice view of the burning coal. you can NOT use Bituminous coal with the hopper or it will burn inside the hopper and you risk overheating and warping. I only burn anthracite coal and as a person who is gone for 12 hours at a time I would never be without a hopper again. Talk about ease of operation, this is by far the easiest stove to maintain that I have ever had. I removed a consolidated dutch-west Federal airtight when I installed this one and what a difference. the hopper basically meant for me that I shake the stove down and add coal every morning and do a shake down only each night. my ash has little to no "unburnt" chunks. as far as the post asking for comparisons between this and a DS circulator goes if the height of the rear chimney is a concern for you (it was for me I have to go through and existing fireplace) the HITZER is rated for just about the same heat output and the rear vent is several inches lower which made it a viable option for me.
thanks to everyone on this forum you all played a valuable role in my last stove purchase
FYI I house is a single story ranch with the stove set up in the basement. with no special changes made for circulation the stove easily maintains a temp of 80 in the basement and mid 70's upstairs when the blower is activated and it gets a bit warmer in the basement when it is not. overall it heats over 2200 square feet without a problem.
today the windchill is below zero and I am sitting cozy

com paired to the stove I removed (Consolidated Dutchwest Federal large airtight) and the stove I grew up with in my parents house (Better N' Bens coal only stove) this stove requires far less maintenance. I have to shake it down only once or twice a day compared to three or four times with the others. the hitzer burns much cleaner and because of that I use less coal than before.
