I read where people say to bank the coal in back of the boiler and or stove. Why bank it?

Thanks

So you can keep a heavy layer of coal for hours of burning pleasure, but still keep a section of hot coals exposed to burn off volatiles and help eliminate puffbacks

Some firebox designs almost require it. A deep V shaped firebox comes to mind.

Yes Sir, mine does. My banking is actually in the middle. I pile the coal as high as I can, letting exposed coal at the front and rear both, it's what seems to work the best.

I bank the coal up against the baffle in the Harman for those exact reasons. 12 hours minimum before I have to shake and refill.
