My (new) old farm house in VT has a 1 zone oil fired forced air system. During my weekend visits the 2 coal stoves on the first floor keep the downstairs nice and toasty never allowing the t'stat to call for heat. The second floor eventually, thru convection up the stairs and 2 registers in the ceiling, gets some heat but I want more quicker. Could I move the only t'stat to the second floor hallway allowing it to control the heat on the 2nd floor and letting the stoves control 1st floor heat?

Yes you could do that. You may find you want to use dampers on the vents for the first floor since you want the furnace heat pumped to the second floor where the coal stoves are not.

A bedroom may be a better location for the thermostat. The hall would see the heat coming up the stairway,

Thanks for the responses. Good idea of blocking off the 1st floor supply's.

For my setup, I just added an additional thermostat in my upstairs bedroom. When my boy is not visiting, I shut off the bedroom thermostat and run off of the main one downstairs. When he comes up, I shut off the main t-stat and run off of the one in the upstairs bedroom. I do have 3 zones, one for his room and two downstairs. I have his flow adjusted to 100% flow and throttle back the downstairs zones as his room has a high heat demand due to lack of insulation. Using 2 thermostats in tandem gives me flexability for different circumstances since the original owner didn't bother installing separate t-stats to control each zone. In your case, you're going to want to be able to adjust your downstairs air flow and send that heat upstairs.

Blocking off registers has it breaking point as at some point air flow will be reduced to a point of tripping the High Safety Limit due to a furnce heat exchanger overheat condition...and the fan cycles would be increased to only short times off to maybe even non stop before tripping that Safety.

And then there's the Cold Air Returns that will defeat this whole blocking off Supplys idea as well.

There is a science to zoning any type heating system.

Without a mechcanlcal redesign a fail safe way to hurry the heat to travel up to the upstairs is to simply hurry the existing cool air at the floor level up there down the stairs with a suitable fan. All that cool air leaving will be naturally replaced w/ 1st floor ceiling level Hot air.

May find decent results by running the furnace blower 24/7, but my plan laid out above is 'guaranteed' ;)
