Yet another EFM520 install thread!

Good to know. So far even with warm temps no out fires and no bad smells. My barrel has a sealing lid so i think that helps keep the draft positive. I did just add something to the setup though.

Nice!

Looks like today will be another good test for your chimney draft. Temps in the 70's, again.

I've had no out fires or draft issues during the warm days. This morning it was 14 degrees. Went down to check the boiler. It was just SITTING there, not even running. This is going to take some getting used to.

NICE!

I was going to ping you to find out how the 520 was doing. This is the coldest weather we have had since the install. Glad to hear it's "SITTING" there doing it's thing!

What the hell happened to your name? Did you stop burning wood completely?

EFM uses very realistic (conservative) btu ratings for their equipment. Unlike some other stoker boilers that are rated based on some sort of mystery number, or on input btu's rather than net output.

EFM says on 4 teeth that unit puts out 75,000 btu's per hour. How does that compare to the Harman? 8-)

Ha!!! When I joined the forum I had replaced one wood burner with the Harman. My intent was to use the other wood stove regularly, as I had always done. For quite a few years now that stove (the Fisher) sits there neglected most of the time. I do have a fire in it today. I figured it was time to update.

When I first made the switch to coal fired in an EFM I really just needed a way to get heat W/O wood, and cheap.
An EFM stoker in an average home is like having a big block in a pickup truck.

My house is a large 2 story farm house built late 1700's, drafty and no shelter. The s20 stoker from a 520 boiler never never needs to work to heat this house, and DHW .

All credits go to you guys at NEPA and Dave O'Neil !!!!

My 350 can easily heat my drafty old place. I can't give up on the Harman and it's wonderful radiant warmth. Been burning since November when I struck the match.

BUT, not just an ordinary big block, more like a modified & supercharged big block.. ;)

I say that because my 520 heats DHW for 2 houses + heats 2 houses & my repair shop.. :D

I look at a single house heating load as a joke for a 520. :)

When I first started looking for stoker boilers, I thought I needed an AA260 or an EFM 700. Dave O'Neil told me that unless I was planning on heating my shop and the neighbors house, a 520 was PLENTY. Looking back he was correct, about the boiler size and many other things related to the install.

Rob, i know you & i pm'd quite a few times when i was looking for a boiler to replace my 600,000 BTU OWB & i was not just a little skeptical when an EFM 520 was suggested to replace my wood burning monster. The winter of 2014/2015 had some brutal January weather that completely took away my skepticism . It did require setting my 520 on 7 teeth & 7 air,but it got the job done & relieved my fears. Like CK, i marvel at my 520 almost every time i walk into my boiler room & hear the click, click & the quiet tinkle from the auger + the steady hum of the blower. When it is set at 7/7,it is more like standing there in awe of the roar of the fire, the many click, clicks & more intense sound of coal moving thru the auger.
