Restored DF520 is running

PostBy: Gpmorin On: Mon Jan 23, 2017 2:09 pm

Hi folks,

I've been poking around for a while. I've been burning a hand fired Godin stove for many years. Last year was it's last. The brick lining needs to be replaced. I decided to retire this old friend...

I bought a used DF520 last fall, and spent some time repairing and installing. The tips here have been most valuable. I installed it inline with my oil boiler and it's now keeping the place warm.

Friends and family were asking lots of questions, so I created a Youtube.com video explaining some of the details. Here it is:

Any questions or comments are welcome. Thanks to all who participate in this forum, - I picked up lots of tips here, making this installation go well with very few challenges.

Welcome to the forum G,

Nice boiler, nice install and great video description of you operation. Thanks for posting it! The more stoker videos, the better!

One thing though, I don't think that is a "DF" 520 you got there, just a 520.

Nice install. Very nice piping work on the returns. Easy swap from oil to coal with that chimney setup - I also use the DPDT switch idea to send the heat call to one boiler or the other.

What is the feed rate set at? Sounds pretty high in the video.

6 was my guess. A lot of people have issues with auger fumes at high feed rates & a short auger.

I heard the high feed rate when I was watching the video, but forgot about it b4 it ended.Unless it is heating a massive house,it likely will never need set that high.

Nice install and good video! Welcome to the forum. You certainly made a terrific entrance providing us with a video tour, usually we are begging for pic's!

Its nice to see some variety in stoker boiler videos. Judging by the suggestions I get coming up on my you tube account that Stoker Don guy seemed to have a monopoly on those videos!! Rumor has it since he went to one active boiler in his own house he has felt the need to hit the road to fire up coal boilers in other peoples driveways!!! :P

Ha! That rumor is true. Don came over Saturday and we fired up my new to me EFM 520 S20 stoker. That burner is amazing. it's like a Pratt and Whitney engine! Harman is coming out Saturday and the EFM is going into the basement.

Thanks for that, Don.

How do I determine the 'lineage' of the boiler? I can marginally read the plate in the back - I'll post what I think it says later today. Also - that may explain something else - I had to machine a shoulder on the casting the auger runs thru, and make a collar and 'gear shield' to adjust the feed rate. When researching and looking at photos, this stoker would not accept the feed adjuster without cutting that shoulder... I noticed this late in the project, however was able to machine the casting and collar arrangement.

Yes - I believe it is at 6. It's a little challenging for me to say exactly. The homemade feed adjuster is 1/8" thick and drops into the teeth a little later than I expect the factory provided does. I'm still fussing with the feed rate and air. I originally did the 4/4 setting, but it seems the burner ran long every time it fired. I'm playing with the air to get the most complete burn possible.

We heat ~2400 sq. feet with 3 zones, and it has no shrouds, so the basement stays @ ~ 78 degrees.

Suggestions on settings?

Thanks for the comments and feedback!

From OWB to EFM520 installed in truck box I posted this link in case you are interested in seeing an EFM520 that works hard during the heating season. You might also consider the insulation as I did mine, depends how much heat you want/need in your basement & whether you need covers to suit your design tastes.
I am heating 2 houses + DHW for both houses & my 30 x 40 repair shop. I am currently on 6 teeth/6 air & have used 7/7 when temps drop below zero +windy.
I think it is likely that 4/4 will work for you, nothing wrong with the stoker running for a longer period of time,it just has to be set high enough to handle the most demanding part of the 24 hr cycle.\
Rob is good at explaining the setting /cycle time so that it makes sense.
