Harman Magnum stoker vs. alaska Channing III

Harman Magnum stoker vs. alaska Channing III

I will be buying a coal stove in a couple weeks. :D I have narrowed my choices down to the Harmon magnum stoker, or the Alaska Channing III. These two choices are basically because the two dealers are not too far away. Is the Harman worth the extra $1,000 in price. Any positive or negative information on these two stoves would be most appreciated. Thank-you.

I think you will find that both stove are very well built units. They have some subtle differences in the way you control the stoves. The harman controller allows for the use of a wall mounted thermostat standard where as the alaska uses the auto heat system in which you control the size of the fire manually. I originally bought my channing with the opional alaska stat themostat sytem which is about an extra $250 which allows the stove to use a wall mounted thermostat to control the room temperature. However I have since installed a coal-trol and It will trump the alaska stat or harmans's current controller. My advice would be to go with the alaska with the standard controller and order a coal-trol, for no other reason than Harman's terrible customer service reputation. Harman must also realize the coal-trol is the way as they are bringing out a new magnum stove in August which will utilize a similar control system to that of the coal-trol.
