All the street vendors seem to sell the same philly pretzels so you can't make a mistake and it's so fresh in the morning. You may have to chase it with a tall metmucil drink though - both are well worth it!!

Should be out of here within the hour, Mom is a little shaky on her feet from laying in the bed for a week but other than she's in real good shape. She's been moving around since yesterday. So far so good with the reason for surgery in the first place, no headaches. It was difficult week but if it relieves the constant issues she was having it will have been worth it.

Funny thing is my other Brother is supposed to have same surgery for the same problem with the same Doctor at the same hospital in a few weeks. He may be having second thoughts.... this was supposed to be a 2 day visit. That said both of these complications she had were rare and extremely rare to have both of them. I'm sure he'll go through with it.

The staff here at this hospital is excellent, my Mother is a retired RN and she was very impressed.

Glad to hear the good news.

Now a word of caution: hospitals and doctors have been recommending Miralax to assist patients move bowels and there have been Neuropsychiatric events that have been identified especially in children. The cautionary mention here is that we have recently traced such a event when my mom was hospitalized from a bleeding stroke back in 2014. I heard about the issue in children and the symptoms described were exactly the same my mom experienced starting two days after she was hospitalized. The symptoms in elderly mimick psudeo bulbar affect (PBA) and gradually get worse. Once she stopped miralax, some of the worst symptoms began resolving but at the time we thought drugs were helping.

Now that I saw the psychiatric issue with Miralax (Polyethylene Glycol (PEG) 3350 also used in car antifreeze ) it made sense what caused and changed her life so drastically two years ago. My advice is if anyone is taking miralax to stop immediately and use a probiotic.

I've heard them rattle off the drugs and I don't remember hearing that one, I recall colace being mentioned but I don't think she is taking that now. They went through the list each time with her before giving them. Actually a good thing because there was one prescription she took they almost gave her two doses, they never took it off the IV list and she had already taken it orally. Wasn't the nurses fault because it was on the list but how it managed to stay on the list I'm not sure, somebody probably got in trouble over it.

What I don't understand is why there wouldn't be some type of safeguard in place for that. Being a programmer I can tell you it wouldn't be difficult to flag that as potential issue if the dosage doubles.

Mom is doing very well, had to use a walker for a few days because she was wobbly on her feet after laying in bed for so long . She's getting back to her normal self and at this point it appears even better. The surgery appears to have helped with the problems she was having and we'll just have to see how much as she continues to heal.

Keep in mind this was elective surgery, she wasn't sick when she went in there. The conventional procedure for this is to take some bone from the hip and they attach that to the vertebrae in some way which fuses them together. I don't know how new it is but for her they used some kind of plastic, it can take up to year to completely fuse.

It's easy to confuse them, but your thinking of "propylene glycol" that's used in auto antifreeze,.... not polyethylene glycol, which is used a lot in the medical/pharmaceutical field.

Propylene glycol in antifreeze is toxic,.... polyethylene glycol in medicines is not.

CN,
I'll provide a link and context to support my allegation under a new thread because I strongly believe it's that important.

Richard,
I had a similar bone graft shaved from the hip but placed on the femur neck 20 years ago. It's holding up quite well on such a thin bone so I'm encouraged your Mothers' will too.

Update on the surgery, it helped a lot but she had another disc herniated in her lower back which leads us too........ I'm sitting in hotel room in Philly again. :x

She had the surgery on Friday and had the same issue with calcium deposit they removed which lead to spinal fluid leak. When it became apparent she wasn't leaving on Saturday I became the designated caregiver... I should make this a career. As of last night she was still laying down. The issue with this leakage is it gives you severe headache and nausea. Hopefully she is a little better today and maybe leave tomorrow.

On a good note, no ICU, no tubes down her neck etc.
