I used to burn coal in my Franks boiler. I think it was made in Canada. It is rated at 80k btu. I had a bin that held 4 tons. In 2013 I replaced my oil boiler and decided to not hook up the coal boiler. I took out the coal bin. Each year I missed tending a fire a little more. This fall I bought a small coal stove to try and satisfy my urge for fire. The stove only made me miss having the boiler hooked up. I never got rid of the boiler because it weighs around 600 lbs and didn't want to move it. So now it is getting hooked back up. The return water will go through the coal boiler first, then the oil boiler and out to the zones. Hopefully I have attached pictures of my set up.

That could be a real nice setup there David. Hook that green monster up! There's a nice red radiator next to it dying for some coal fired hot water!

Hey David,

I see a few of these boilers on my local craigslist. They seem very robustly built. Curious what size area you are heating? Anything I should know about them?

They are a well made boiler. Not sure if grates are still available? They also have an electronic motor/damper assembly for the inlet air that is a little unusual (compared to the other hand-feds I have seen).

My house is about 1700 sq. ft. and my oil boiler output is 84K. The coal boiler heats the house and domestic water no problem.
