No legal requirement to have one (SS#)...and one can cancel theirs too.CoalisCoolxWarm wrote:Hunting licenses in PA "Require" SSN. If you "don't have one" the clerks are supposed to call the help line and they will assign a number to you.
I haven't met one clerk yet who even knew about that option (Amish, minor children, etc).
I tell them to get their book out (which the usually take some time to find) and I show it to them. Then the number is always busy
In PA it is "to stop deadbeat dads from getting a license" Talk about overreach!
Just give them a 9 digit #.

How does one cancel their SSN? I've never heard of that.davidmcbeth3 wrote:No legal requirement to have one (SS#)...and one can cancel theirs too.

I recently did a CDL hazmat renew. Knowledge test, eye test, backround check, fingerprints. Why do they fingerprint every 4 years? If fingerprints are unique to you do they change over time? All this bullshit comes with three different fees to three separate agencies. It's a government jobs program.

Your fingerprints don't change but your status with them can change. Some clearances I needed were good for only two years.gaw wrote:I recently did a CDL hazmat renew. Hmmm...instead of making fun, why not help and educate? I'm sure you weren't born knowing that. You had to learn first, correct?
Reality check: There will always be someone who knows something that you don't know.

The negatives of not have a SS number are probably worse than the positives. no deduction on taxes for parents whole childhood being one, unless that has changed. Many employers wont touch you with a 10 foot poll. I guess if your parents can afford it, and you are going to be self employed, it might work out fine.
There was a law passed, I think, allowing Amish not to pay in. They didnt ask for it. They had asked not to receive it, is what I remember, but again Im not positive on that and it likely changes from group to group what they do. Maybe they still have numbers, I do not know.
As for opting out, I have no idea. Please enlighten us David as I didnt think that was possible??? It doesnt seem like the good would outweigh the bad. edit: I mean opting out after having a number already.

Actually your fingerprints do change somewhat (from what I was told at my last one) the lady could tell right off that my wife was in the medical field. Washing your hands excessively somewhat erase prints while on the flip side working with your hands in a dirty environment with or without minor injuries also effect them. Not saying this as fact only repeating what I was told this past summer for my clearance update.

I want to say I've never seen anything so retarded in my life, but I guess nothing should surprise me anymore. Not sure why I am typing this out other than it's a good opportunity to bitch. PennDOT has been asleep at the wheel for years but here is a few examples of just how screwed up things are with the DMV.
Time is now to renew my class-A CDL and the paperwork came in the mail to appear in person in order to hand them a $90.00 check for renewal, get my camera card, and walk 10 steps to the photo booth to get my mugshot, pissed off looking face because I just handed these vultures another $90.00.
Sounds simple enough right? Going to Altoona anyhow to get another Cortizone shot in my spine for a herniated disc, so why not kill 2 birds with one stone?
Hell no! The liscense center is open to take your money and give you a camera card but the photo booth is only open 3 effin' days out of the week! That was seriously what I wanted to do was take another afternoon to drive the 30 miles in there to get these jokers to give me a new license. Another nice inconvenience to the working man while these overplayed buffoons sit back and laugh.
2 years ago I was due for my Medical card so I scheduled a physical and was given a new card by the doctor, this was done nearly a month before the old card expired. My wife did what she always does, she scanned it, blew it up to a larger size, and emailed it off to Harrisburg and then received a confirmation email from them that they got it. Several weeks later a new Class-B license shows up in the mail along with a hateful letter that stated that my Medical Card was not renewed and thus my CDL was now invalid. Awesome.
Well, I felt sorry for the person holding the other end of the phone when my wife called to Harrisburg the next day, they insisted it did not show up there and could not explain the confirmation email. Long story short, I had to drive to Altoona to get the whole mess straightened out, what a pain in the ass. I have learned my lesson to just take the new medical card straight to the DMV so that no one can contest it.
Maybe some of you that live closer to Harrisburg can explain to me just what in the world those clowns down there actually do? Just another example of overpayed bureaucracy that runs amok and kindly accepts our hard earned dollar with one hand and giving us the middle finger with the other.
At that, I digress!

I got my letter in the mail. They needed me to come into the Lebanon,Pa drivers center & write a check for $90.50. BUT,i also needed to bring my birth certificate with ,i guess to prove that being born in this state 60 yrs ago qualified me as a citizen of the USA.
Unlike 4 yrs ago, this time was a long wait !! Supposedly 4 yrs from now I can just go online to do it all.

Ya Windy and now according to the letter that came here your birth certificate "must have a raised seal", for whatever the reason. I panicked, thinking that mine did not and asked my father-in-law about that (he a trucker also) and he thought so many years back they did not have this raised seal. I was thinking I would have to call Rep. Toppers office to get a new one.
Fortunately when I dug mine up, it had a raised seal on it. I don't think the dude behind the desk at the DMV even looked at it anyhow. Such bullshit.
Make sure you check that out first before you waste a trip Windy
