Hot Air Coal Stoker Stove: Hyfire

Post by FrankTheTank » Mon. Feb. 20, 2017 6:32 pm

Just got my new hyfire up and running and I'm having trouble getting the feed rate set. Looking for some advice. When I got it burning the min feed rate seemed ok at 5. When I went to set the max I started at 40 and have worked it all the way down to 10 and it's still pushing hot coals over the end. I have the thermo set at 68 in my basement and haven't been able to reach that temp yet. Right now it's at 65. I started out at 58 and brought the temp up gradually. I have a plenum on it with three 8" ducts that I left closed until a couple hours ago. My plan was to blow the heat out the holes to heat up the basement and get the radiant heat up through floor then open the ducts. I'm not sure what to do right now I have warm air coming in the upstairs and it's 69 right now. Is it possible that the stove isn't getting enough cold air? I have the basement door open to try and cycle the air but right now I'm thinking this may be my problem. The fire rate is 99 and the blowers have been cranking the whole time. I have plugged the holes to try and force the air upstairs maybe I need to open one? That's all I can think of to explain what I have going on. At least we're not in a cold snap so I have some flexibility to get this adjusted. I just have a feeling with the feed rate not working out that this stove isn't running right. Attached are two pictures showing the flame. Also I added pics of the Mano and baro which I think I have set correctly and a pic of the setup. I appreciate any advice and can get more pics up if I'm not clear enough. Thanks

Check the air inlet on the combustion blowers. There is a cover that might be closed. Open it halfway and see how it performs.

use the standard settings from the factory, 6 and 40 to start, it takes a long time for it to settle out. IF you are not reaching the Set Temperature, it will keep raising the feed rate to increase the heat output, once reached, it may over shoot and then settle down. It it's still FR=99, try lower the thermostat down a couple and let it catch up, it take a couple hours each change. don't make large temp swings with thermostat.

if it continually pushes hot coals off, something is not right, if you are lowering the MAX down to like 10, it should almost be at idle with quite a bit of ash at the end. Coal takes a while to react, so take your time, make small adjustments and let it settle out for a couple hours to adjust. only change it a couple points at a time and let it catch up and adjust accordingly. make take a couple hours.

Do you have a digital temp gauge to see what the room temp is compared to the Thermostat. ? the bias may need adjusted a bit to compensate differences in the thermostat. sometimes they are a little off from actual temperatures.

most of us that have the Coaltrol, just leave it at a certain temp, dont; use the setback or anything, takes too long to adjust and then overshoots, typically.

make sure you baro is perfectly level for proper operation, not sure if the camera angle, but it looks a little off level?

Thanks guys

It was the covers on the combustion blowers. I remember seeing that but I missed that step. I cracked them open and obviously things are getting better. I knew it had to be something simple but just overlooked that. I moved the max back to 40 and the fr has been slowly coming down. I'll keep an eye on it and adjust if needed.

Thanks again for the input.

Nice! keep us posted.

My older hyfire doesn't have the covers on the blowers, so I always forget about them if they do have them. My keystoker has one, but it's still set at 1/2 open from the factory. :)
