Total Knee Replacements

Total Knee replacements

PostBy: johnjoseph On: Fri Mar 03, 2017 4:05 pm

All,

Curious to know if anyone has first hand experience with total knee replacements? My mom is 64 and is having both knees done at the end of this month; my brother and I are going to be looking after her when she returns home and just trying to gain perspective on what we may expect. Thanks.

J.J.

I had mine done a little over 5 years ago so close to the same age. At the time it seemed like it was taking forever but looking back it wasn't all that bad but everyone has a different pain threshold & I heard they are less invasive now. The biggest problem for me was sitting & laying with my knees elevated but a wedge shaped pillow helped that. I pushed myself a bit & did things like run the snow blower while the wife went shopping, the handles are the same height as my walker so second gear was no problem. I wish her the best of luck, they aren't the same as the original equipment but far better than what mine had become, about three years out I would sometimes forget I had them done, the bad thing is you have to find what I call a sweet spot to kneel on but once you find it not too bad.

Thanks Sam..that gives me some perspective on what it will be like...she doesn't bitch or complain much, unless it's to the absolute extent if discomfort...she just wants to be able to get around with out the pain. Thanks again

Both at once?

I've known people who had the complete replacement ... one at a time is easier.

But she is still not that old ... if she's in good shape and will work out I would say its do-able.

Most doctors prefer both at once, in any surgery there is risk, not so much from the surgery itself any more but just the individual & the risk of infection. I did it because I figured one operation =one recovery & rehab. The only other surgery I've had was a rotator cup & I would take the knees over that any day, they won't even do the rotator (at least my doc) if you have ever had open heart surgery or are a heavy smoker, I'm clear in both so never bothered to ask why I just wanted mine done & over with. :)

Well folks my mom has made it through her surgery and 24 hrs later she is up a mobile doing physical therapy. In pain...but she is very determined and working through the pain. This is the first time in my life that I have seen my mom this way and it's kind of tough to watch. However, we are staying positive and encouraging her with praise and laughter. Definitely an eye opening experience for all of us.

Good for her JJ, as with most everything it gets better with time. About 5 or 10 minutes after I woke up after surgery they had me stand up & walk a few steps, I thought they were crazy but I think it was to make sure everything was correct & glue was set. I'm sure they will tell you what to watch for & expect, best of luck to all.
