Welcome Back NEPA Crossroads Members

Welcome Back NEPA Crossroads Members

PostBy: Richard S. On: Fri Mar 10, 2017 9:46 am

NEPA Crossroads is undergoing what is called a DDoS attack (Distibuduted Denial of Service) which is still continuing. Briefly the attacker has control of numerous compromised computers and is directing them to make numerous requests to my server. It gets overwhelmed and simply crashes. If you want an analogy it's like a whole bunch of rude people calling your phone 1000 times per second, as you could imagine the people you want to talk to would have a difficult time getting through and in this case the phone itself stops operating.

I'm not going to speculate on the who or why, it could be anyone for any reason. It's impossible to trace because the owners of the computers and servers doing the attacking are oblivious to what is going on. If you are one of these people that do not keep your OS and software up to date it just may be you.

I've implemented a service called Cloudflare that routes all traffic through their network before it reaches my server, they have the resources to handle this. Traffic that is illegitimate will be blocked and regular traffic can continue onto the server. That web page you see pop up that says it's checking your browser before loading the page is only temporary.

This and other things I've done should prevent this from happening again. I should of been prepared for this but typically these types of attacks are carried out on major commercial and government sites.

Now onto your regularly scheduled bickering. :P

Just a quick note, email notifications are currently disabled.

There is a small issue, I'm on FF so I don't know if this is affecting all browsers. If you submit a post and the filter kicks in the post text is lost. You can hit the back button after the browser check and it should be there.

Freddy the who or why is a mystery to me and will remain so unless they choose to reveal themselves or their motives. It could range from some 10 year old kid that I pissed off because I told him to get off my lawn or some highly skilled individual with an agenda. This is not something that is extremely difficult to do if you want to take the time to educate yourself how to do it.
