That's bull. If there's any new day off it should be 9/11. DK takes 9/11 off anyway. He uses the day to review our family's personal readiness. We look at our emergency food storage and our 72 hour emergence backpacks. I never could because of the school leave policy but starting next year we'll be starting school before Memorial Day so I'll be taking 9/11 off, too. We'll take the day and drive through our emergency escape plan to make sure the family is all on the same sheet of music.

DK is looking forward to the Sep 4th holiday CT is instigating, he said we'll celebrate by going to our favorite BBQ place for pulled pork and boneless baby back ribs. ;)

If the start recognizing Muslim holidays, I can see where other religious groups would staRt demanding recognition.

And then the "solution" will be not to recognize any.

Just the educrats plan...
Start'em while they are young...
Their should be a bunch of push back on this one...
9/11 should be a federal day of remembrance...
Boston and The Cape figured prominently that day...
Two flights departed from Boston and First Jets were scrambled from Otis...

I got a bit confused by the Patriot day holiday...
Since we have a Patriots day holiday here in the original MA Colony...
MA and ME...
But I like Tartan Day... ;)
Interesting bit...
The Scottish Declaration of Independence was signed on April 6, 1320. The American Declaration of Independence was, in fact, modelled on this particular document. Almost half of the signers of the American Declaration of Independence were of Scottish descent

I can't open the link but I'm rather confused. Monday, September 4, 2017, is Labor Day. What is the news?

It seems simple enough. We really shouldn't cut back any more on school days. The kids have had Christmas off for years, so just take off Eid-al-Adha and go to school on Christmas. Swap one for the other.

The article says “This festival commemorates Ibrahim’s (Abraham) willingness to sacrifice his son to God” so it’s pretty much in line with the Bible.

Yes. Don't recognize any. Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion

While we're at it, do away with legislative "prayer breakfasts."
Judging from results of all Congress's efforts, the breakfasts obviously have done no good. ;)

Maybe they should consider some type of personal day or "floating holiday" that would excuse a student's absence on whatever school day might have religious significance to them. The atheists and agnostics could worship their pillows or cellphones for a day.

Technically, the schools are not closed for the Christmas or Easter Holiday. They are closed at that time because of the large amount of absenteeism from both the students and the staff. It just so happens that the Christian religious holidays happen at the same time. Absenteeism is the same reason that school is out in the summer. It used to be the kids were needed on the farm. It doesn't make sense to teach to half or less of the students. You'd just have to repeat yourself later. Why run empty buses or pay to heat or air condition the buildings. You get the picture.

Look at your the school system calendar, it doesn't say Christmas break. Ours says winter holiday. When the number of Muslims impact the productivity of the schools in the same way, they will be closed for their holidays, too. Lisa

Christmas Day is a federal holiday, as well as a state holiday in MA. My suggestion was not to lengthen the school year, but to provide a way for students to take a day off if it has significance in their practice of their religion. They could make up any missed work the same way they would for any other absence.

Before NYS switched to always starting deer season on a weekend, school used to close here the first day of the season. Not enough bus drivers to get all the kids to school (2nd largest in square miles NYS), plus lots of the students were out of school too,... helping get their family's meat supply for the coming winter.

Nobody got upset about it. And the only comments to upon hearing of such behavior was, "So,... d'ya get ya deer ?" :D
