Operating a single circulator on an inverter

Operating a single circulator on an inverter

PostBy: stoker-man On: Mon Mar 20, 2017 6:11 pm

There have been a few occasions when power has been lost and I'm not home. With a hand-fired boiler filled with a few shovels of coal, this can have bad effects when the boiler blows off, as has happened.

I've looked through the posts about inverters but I can't find one that addresses my issue. I only need to run ONE Taco 007 to a heat dump until the fire goes out or I come home and can can shovel the live coal out, which could be 8 hours. I also burn wood in the summer which really heats the water fast but the fire only burns for 30 minutes. It wouldn't be the first time that a thunderstorm knocked out the power just after I started the wood.

Looking for a simple plan for car batteries and inverter setup and I guess it uses a coil to kick out when the power goes out.

Thanks for any ideas or any proven working solution.

Short of having a passive gravity heating loop that rise to the ceiling
joists in your with huge loop of pipe that would drop back to a
large tank and eventually absorb all the heat I do not see much
of an option other than a brood herd of deep cycle golf cart batteries
in series running an inverter to run a 115 volt circulator.

But for how long only a company building these things would be able
to tell you using deep cycle batteries. you also have to worry about
off gassing of the batteries too.

In saying this I doubt your insurance company would pay a claim for
a battery explosion that in turn blew up your hot water heater or home
etc.

A small automatic start generator may be the only option for you as
your insurance company may or would frown on having a set up like that
in your basement. you could hook up the boiler and circulator controls and
still be able to heat your home and a few lights and perhaps the refrigerator
and freezer if you have one.

An 007 can run off of an inverter. It's only drawing about 75 Watts (0.63 amps) when its running. An Alpha circulator only draws about half that.

Yes, a small inverter will work Chris. A single large marine battery will do the job nicely also. A small trickle charger to keep the battery charge will also be needed. It is only going to run a circ pump for maximum of 8 hours. I would use a RIB (Relay in a box) to supply the power to the dump zone. I have one and would be happy to send it to you with a follow up call on wiring directions if you would like.

I should add that 0.63 amps at 120 VAC is 6.3 amps at 12 VDC. Add inefficiencies and it will be drawing about 8.4 amps at 12 VDC. Very doable. Such circulators don't run all the time.

2 Deep Cycle 6 volt Golf Cart Batteries connected in series would be a very wise investment towards this end.
