My son showed me a similar video. It is absolutely amazing how a cat can do that.

Cute,

Moving the cups around quickly, the air around the cups would become permeated with scent and cause confusion, that the cat is not displaying. If the cat was going by scent it would be extending it's nose toward the cups "sniffing" to fine tune the scent location.

However, if you notice, the cat's head never moves forward like they do when they sniff-search. It's head is often slightly twitching left/right - something they do when tracking by sound only. The more likely answer is the cat knows which cup the ball is under by sound. The cat can hear which cup the ball is hitting the sides of.

Cats have evolved with large ears that face forward and are so far apart to act like binocular vision does - to not only hear better, but to know very accurately the direction and distance to sounds that we can't hear. It's estimated their hearing is about 100 times greater than ours.

Just like they know exactly where to pounce on a mouse hiding in grass and leaves. They can hear the mouse making noises we can't. Their brains are able to use their "binocular" hearing to triangulate not only direction, but distance to the exact spot in the grass where the mouse is, then pounce and grab it. The cat's ears are turned forward more than when not hunting and it is exhibiting the same head movements as cats do when hunting by sound.

No need to analyze politics Waldo, the owner is a democrat and cheated by editing the video. Next problem please.

I agree, before I read Paul's post I was gonna say he could hear the ball tapping the inside of the cup. I've had cats all my life lol, they are easy to maintain and can be left alone for a few days at a time, provided of course a litter box, food and water.

They have radar dishes on their heads. They can swivel those ears to hear in pretty much any direction without even moving their head. Cats are pretty neat critters 8-)

Cats are easy to analyze,... they make sense. They are far easier to analyze than things that make nonsense. :D

Very cute. I was thinking along with Simon that the misses were edited out. Paul had an excellent explanation as well.

There was also the famous counting horse. He could add simple numbers and count off the answer with his hoof. Turns out he could not do it when the owner was not present. The owner was signaling the horse when to stop counting, even though he was unaware of it himself and nobody but the horse could detect any signal.
