Can I Run XP Programs on Windows 10?

Can I run XP programs on Windows 10?

PostBy: Freddy On: Fri Mar 24, 2017 5:15 pm

7 or 8 years ago I bought a second hand HP computer running XP. It served me well, but it was time to upgrade. Yesterday I got a new Lenovo with Windows 10. As I feared, my sign software won't work. They want me to spend $1,400 to upgrade. HA! I'm not going to do that. So, the question is: Can I somehow emulate XP on the new computer & run XP programs?

Thanks for any thoughts!

Fred

There is compatibility mode wizard in Win10, type "Run programs made for previous versions of Windows" in windows search.

You can also find the .exe for the program, right click and select properties. There should be option to choose OS.

Your results will vary here especially with something like that. I know I could never get some video and 3-d applications made for XP to run right under Win 7 and that even had XP mode with full XP operating sytem.

*sigh* It's a no go. I even called the company that wrote it. The manufacturer said that only their very latest upgrade will run on Windows 10. Looks like I keep XP on the side & off the Internet. Not the end of the world I can do that.

That is probably the easiest thing to do Fred, there is ways to do this but at the very least you will need a valid retail license for XP or OEM license that was never activated to run it under XP on a Win10.

Another option is to check CL if there is any cheap Win7 Pro higher machines. That has XP built in, no license required.

In either scenario you might run into trouble.

Can he tie the old hard drive to the new machine and run it somehow or copy it and run on an external?

The copy of windows he has will be OEM copy and tied to the mobo of his original machine. You need retail copy to do that and another issue may be the hardware is unsupported under a pure XP environment.

Furthermore multi boot systems are problematic with older OS's because of security improvements.

It's not that any of this can't be done but it can turn into a PITA, using a machine built for XP is best option.

Not to mention finding XP drivers for newer chipsets are a nightmare at best  Just had this problem recently trying get an old W7 machine to run XP, no PCI chipset drivers total fail.

Thanks for trying & all the info.

I do have a valid license & dongle (key) for the software. In my shop I have XP not connected to the internet & it works just fine. It's just that I could always "work at home" before Windows 10. Not the end of the world.

I was referring to Windows, they have two types of licenses. There is the retail license if you buy it in a box that can be installed on another machine at any time. The OEM version comes on the machines you buy in a store, you can change any hardware but the motherboard. The license is tied to the Motherboard.

If you put the XP machine on your local network, you can remote login in via the Windows 10 machine.

Yaaa... but wouldn't I have to leave that machine booted & running all the time?
