Email Notifications are Back

PostBy: Richard S. On: Thu Apr 20, 2017 5:45 am

I can check another thing off my list, in case you are wondering it was disabled because the way it was configured previously would expose the IP for nepacrossroads.com. This is no longer an issue.

Just to note no email from this site should be going into your spam box. If you are not getting emails or they are going into your spam box please let me know.

You can change what notifications you get in the User Control Panel.

For PM's: ucp.php?i=264
For topic Replies: ucp.php?i=prefs&mode=post

It better work since I just spent about two days on it. Making it work is as simple as turning it on, making it work the way I need it so the IP is protected and it's not going to spam is another story ;)

If I might ask, why would anyone want email notifications? I get enough junk email as it stands now.

I for one really missed the feature. At a quick glance it enables me to follow up on a thread I'm interested in when a new response is posted such as yours.

Being an old guy I sometimes don't realize there is a new PM in my inbox for days :D Now I get a notification in minutes !

The Mayor did an outstanding job making it really easy to turn these notifications on or off depending on the individuals preference.

Just the opinion of a senile old guy

I like the feature too, and miss it since it went away. I do understand why, and will be glad when it returns. So far nothing at my end. I haven't seen them ever in my spam, but I'll give it some more time. Thanks for the extra effort Richard.

In case you don;t know there is there links up in the right corner.

New - This based on a time limit, if you don't view a page for X hours it's reset and only new topics will appear since the last activity on the forum.

Active - Similar to new topics but instead is based on time, it defaults to two weeks but you can list up to a (yea) but it maxes out at 500 so it will only go back that far. Roughly 3 to 4 months depending on the time of the year.

Yours - topic you have started or participated in, there is no limit on this.

Additionally the icons can direct you around. This icon Image for example is actually a link that will take you to the first unread post. A lot of people don't know about that one and I'm going to make that feature more prominent on the new forum. There is a complete list of icons here:

Note that if you only want notifications just for replies or just for PM's you can do that.

The Mayor did an outstanding job making it really easy to turn these notifications on or off depending on the individuals preference.

Keep in mind I have not written most of the code for this software, no sense reinventing the wheel. It has been modified significantly from the base version as will the next one. Matter of fact I just made my first line edit yesterday. The forum software is designed to work on most servers, in this case it was not sending the correct return path for the email on this one or the new forum.

Code: Select all
//NEPA MOD - Add the -f parameter so Return-path is not hostname
$result = $config['email_function_name']($to, mail_encode($subject, ''), wordwrap(utf8_wordwrap($msg), 997, "\n", true), $headers, "-f" . $config['board_email']);

There is hundreds of lines like that in this version....

Joe there should be in one your inbox for this one. The topic reply notification is only sent once. If there is twenty new replies you don't get 20 notifications. Once you view the topic that is reset and you'll get a notification with a new reply.

There is a few ways these can be managed. This is based on "subscriptions."

If you set it in your profile "Notify me upon replies by default:" then by default you will automatically be subscribed to the topic.

When posting a new topic /reply to a topic in the options tab is "Notify me when a reply is posted", if you set the default to yes this will already be checked. You can check or uncheck this for any topic at any time. So for example if there is only specific topic you might want notifications for you check this box.

Also down in the lower left is a subscribe/unsubscribe link. You can use this to stop or start notifications for that topic. This can be very useful for topics you want to follow that you have not posted in. There is also an option for this for the entire forum, if for example you want notifications for an entire forum you can subscribe or unsubscribe from it.

Subscriptions can be managed in bulk in the User Control Panel here.

I did get this one Richard, and it's good to see. I understand the notification is only for one post or reply in the thread that I'm involved with. I'll check my control panel for the settings, and if I'm remembering correctly, whilst you were revamping the site, I couldn't find the setting for Email notifications. As if it were removed, (temporarily?). I'll check again to see how it looks, and get back to you.

Unrealted posts removed, topics here and in the regular forums are not the place for chit chats.

Thanks.
