For hand fed stoves. Hopper stoves included although they have an edge over us shovelers. Feel free to use humor. :D I think its been a couple years since we mentioned our results.

I started my big stove about Thanksgiving, switching back and forth from wood to ant to wood, then finished burning the soft I had, then ant, then wood and let her go out last week all on one match so I guess I have the old girl figured out. About 2 tons ant not counting my Chubby, maybe 300 lbs soft, and 1.5 cords of wood.

I went with 4 to 6 and I have a stoker, and yes I have some explaining to do
My Mother In Law moved in late January. House went from comfortable to hot, as required. Often times I just ran the convection blower on full, leaving it plugged in direct to the wall. Well, when I would turn the stove off to empty ashes, I would then walk by the Coal-trol box and still hear the fan blowing and would forget to turn the switch back on. Yes that happened at least 3 times
Other than that it has been a good season

Ok,ok,ok. Got a one ton+ bin. I fill it when it runs out. Guess what? I know it runs out when the fire goes out. So I go into the basement and light it again.

I listed 3 matches in the poll, but need to mention it is 1 match for the DS in the basement and 2 for the upstairs Hitzer due to unexpected brief weather warm up in Feb. Basement is in shut down process as of yesterday and has been lit since late Sept.

next yr the Vigilant goes in the basement so I can join the "0" match club ;)

Due to the fickle weather and several false starts to Spring, I did several day burns. No more cleaning out firepot to restart. Just add one small scoop of matchlite on top, thin layer of coal on top of that, a couple pokes from above to make air channels and I am up and running.

This was my first full year burning black rocks and it was awesome. I did two clean outs during the winter and we were up and down twice this spring with the crazy weather. Nice warm year!! Thanks for all the help to everyone! Reading all these posts helps us rookies more than you know!

We've all been there Sawdust!

It was an up and down year with temps which made it tempting to let mine go out but I have windows  I did go back and forth with fuel types several times too, which is much easier in a hopperless stove. I need one of those fancy windowstats Michaelanthony uses...

I pushed trough the Feb. and March warmups and quit about April 10th. 5 months to the day. I usually do 6 months, starting up in Oct. Only burned 3.25 tons, my lowest ever. If I would have had better coal this past season it would have been even less. Oh yeah, one match. The hoppa is my good friend!
