I have a nice chunk of cannel coal for you! Pyma was correct, the brakes are on their own circuit. The brake lights share a circuit with the turn signals and relays perform the change over. I guess it was two problems making life difficult. A bad ground on the trailer to the coupler and the fuses going just made it crazier. Thanks guys, mission accomplished.
