REFURBISH EFM 520

I have a severly rusted EFM 520. The EFM 520 is severly rusted in the back wall which mounts the stovepipe receptor. Does anyone have any suggestions to resurrect this unit? Will EFM or or any of their dealers refurbish an EFM 520? What does a new EFM 520 unit cost? Will EFM be manufacturing the EFM 350 unit and what will that cost because our home is only 1500 square foot and the EFM 520 is OVERKILL? Is there another good anthracite rice coal furnace by another company that is better sized to our home and better priced? As long as the rusted portion is not part of the pressure vessel, any good welder should be able to make a proper repair.

What you probably need is a new base. Take all necessary precautions, remove all the sheet metal, and use an engine hoist and jack the boiler off of the base, remove the stoker unit, then take the base outside (it isn't very heavy) and it will be clear what you need.

The base has three removable Plates on it the two sides Plates and the rear where you flue comes out you must remove
the jackets first then you will see the two screw heads on the Plate one on each side at the top corners above the flue
you turn the screws a half of turn to loosen the plate you can then take it off and Put a new one on the same goes for the side ones you must take out the Auger & Tube first & on the other side you would remove the blower assembly to remove the plate Pull you stove pipe off for the rear one also when you remove the rear Jacket check the water coil area for leaks you might need a new water coil gasket

I got ahold of scrapperjr and he said he could make me a set of back plates. Lucked out and found a welder who is currently working on historic first steam locomotives at STEAM TOWN. This guy really knows steam, pressure vessels and metallurgy and is working on high pressure steam engines welding and riveting daily. He works out of Hometown, PA. I recommend him to anyone who wants a good analysis of their unit for repairs. He took a few moments and saw significant steam scoring around the coil plate that cut deep into the supporting back of the furnace that the coil plate bolts on. I do not have the trained eye but he spotted it immediately.
