If you are creative you can put a manual dampner in the stack just above the stove and make a handle to control the dampner that would come out over the top of the stove through the metal surround or facia plate.
You will probably have to connect an arm on the damper rod, about 3" long, and a matching arm on the end of the control rod that comes out over the top of the stove, and then connect the two arms with a connecting link with pivoting ends. Sort of like steering linkage on the front of an old truck or tractor. Or if you want to get real creative you could put a sprocket on the two shafts and connect them with a loop of chain. Like bicycle chain.
I have seen this type of setup on inserts. They were all 'homemade' But they all worked well.
