...I have a Hitzer insert as my avatar shows. Is there any way to add a damper to my installation? A 25' SS liner connects to the top of my stove and everything is unaccessible due to the nature of an insert. The only way I can control air flow is thru the ash pan damper. I think that my coal consumption is rather high...about 60-80 lbs per day. Heat output is fine...300 degree surface temp is about average. I've been reading all about baro dampers and the such that I was wondering if I have any options at all. Thanks in advance...Dave

If you are creative you can put a manual dampner in the stack just above the stove and make a handle to control the dampner that would come out over the top of the stove through the metal surround or facia plate.

You will probably have to connect an arm on the damper rod, about 3" long, and a matching arm on the end of the control rod that comes out over the top of the stove, and then connect the two arms with a connecting link with pivoting ends. Sort of like steering linkage on the front of an old truck or tractor. Or if you want to get real creative you could put a sprocket on the two shafts and connect them with a loop of chain. Like bicycle chain.

I have seen this type of setup on inserts. They were all 'homemade' But they all worked well.

Hope this helps LsFarm
