Will This Work?

PostBy: sterling40man On: Sat Jun 14, 2008 1:24 pm

All,

I found some pex al pex on ebay. The seller told me that it was ASTM F1281, 200*, and 100psi. Seems to be a very reasonable price. My lines will be undergroud (60'). About a 100' run total, inside and out. Will this work for my feed and return lines on the Keystoker KA-6 in series with my oil boiler?

I wasn't able to put a link, but it's ebay item# 350030936778. Sorry

Thanks,
Bob

It's the correct spec (ASTM F1281) for what you want. I couldn't find the boiler tapping size on the Keystoker web site. If it's 1-1/4" or 1" you will be ok. The OD of the tubing is 1.26", min. wall thickness, 0.114". If only your coal boiler is outside and you connect your boilers in series when the coal boiler goes out it will become a heat radiator. How much this matters depends on how much time and the season when the coal boiler is not used.

FYI, my KA-6 is 1 1/2" pipe thread for your heat pipes. Unless they made changes...but I doubt they would go smaller than that.

I've have the same seller bookmarked for a 100' coil. I tried to buy local but no one here handles pex-al-pex.

My run will be 25' exterior and 25' interior. Are you rolling your own insulation? How deep are you planting it?
I'm going to wrap the two pex lines in foam pipe insulation and stuff it into a 4" tile pipe or PCV (the run is so short).

I cut the slab today. Will begin the trench tomorrow. Ahhh...the glamorous work  Probably ought to buy the pipe

218bee,

I will be installing the boiler in my garage. I have a 3" schedule 40 gray pipe running 6" along the foundation of the house going into my garage. It's about 24" deep. I have 3 layers, 24" wide, of 2" blue foam on top of it. I was informed by my plumber that this would sufice since the pipe is so close to the foundation that the ground never really freezes. We'll add some glycol to the system just to be safe. I'll just snake the pex al pex through it. I installed this pipe when I built my garage just in case I would need to do something like this.

LOL, thats thinking ahead!! I made it under the garage footer this AM, thats the worst of it. Hot work even in the cool of the morning. The rest is cake until I hit the house foundation, then a 5" core drill for the hole into the basement.

I ordered my pipe from Pexoutlet last night. Now to track down fittings.

This is the type of Pex-Al-Pex fittings I use.. you have to chamfer the plastic on the inside to make a smooth trasition over the 'O'-rings.. and it helps to have a 'rounding tool' something to make sure the pipe is round.. the compression nut is a good gauge for this.. I have a tool for inserting inside the tube to make is round.. I use a pocket knife or a large tapered reamer or a 1.5" drill bit to make the chamfer.

I like these because they are re-usable.. and if they leak, you can fix it often by tightening a bit more,, or remove the pex and add a thin layer of RTV on the O-rings and reinstall...

You may find a better price than this,, but it is about the going rate.. Greg L
