Of course I know nothing about this particular boiler, but as a general rule of thumb, and I've personally seen some attempts that worked for a while, if you are going to weld a boiler it does not work to simply weld a hole. You must fashion a patch and weld the patch over the hole.

The reason being, from what I've seen, is that rust holes are cone shaped, with the pinhole being the small end of the cone.

Gaw, I cannot see anything which would be damaged by welding the existing coil plate as a permananent seal to the back plate. I have a local welder who will look it over and have the final say on that unless Stokerman or anyone else cautions against permanently damaging the coil.

Stokerman, thanks for the plate so tell me what that plate costs? Are the studs shown in the picture part of the plate so the coil can be reattached? How best to remove the previous studs, tap them out or grind them down? How to order the new plate and what is the part number?

Just grind off the old studs and weld the new plate on. It already has studs welded onto it. That's a better fix than ruining your coil, which costs several hundred dollars. In a few days we'll have a larger plate, which might work better in your case. Call us in a few days 610 965 9041
