Has anyone heard or have had dealings with the Lehigh Coal & Navigation Company? I just came across their website and have never heard of them.

The site sure is nice. Although it does not mention retail sales anywhere I found.

My stoves only burn deep-mined coal, 'nuff said. :)

Their sales guy is a member here, he posted this a while back:

I am new to the coal industry, as a sales rep., yet I was raised with a coal furnace in our house. I am very exicted to be working at LCN. We have some of the best anthracite coal. We are currently producing large quantities of all sizes of anthracite. The quality has been very good and if anyone is looking for bulk or bags of anthracite please feel free to contact me at [email protected]. Thank you for your interest and I look forward to hearing from you.

The family that used to own Reading coal runs it, I know that they did have some issues with quality because I removed a coal boiler from one of the company owners home in Pottsville, I looked at what she was burning from LCN and it had a few pieces of wood and other debris.

As John said, nothing like buying the deep mined stuff from the breaker, however having said that there are coal brokers such as LCN that might be able to get you some decent coal at a good price. Just be sure you know what you are getting before you take delivery of 23 tons or so. ;)

The problem is that unless you're buying from a known good source, such as Superior or Harmony, the quality of the coal almost always varies. When I was buying from a coal yard in Stroudsburg the quality constantly varied from reasonably good to poor. The other point to remember is you're going to use more coal to generate a given amount of heat when burning poor quality coal compared to the high quality product. Since coal is sold by weight that translates to more $$$ out of pocket.

I would taste test the coal, as Matthaus suggests, before ordering the big delivery.
