blind sided

PostBy: gambler On: Mon Jun 30, 2008 6:54 pm

I am sitting here still in disbelief. Today I was told that I have cancer in my right eye. Soon I will be making a trip to Philly to recieve treatment. At this point I do not know if the cancer has spread to any other parts of my body but I am praying that it hasn't. I am only 46 years old and have a lot of things left in life that I need to finish.

Sorry for such a downer post but I just needed to tell someone. I have not told my wife or children yet.

Sorry dude, I can tell you this. You're not alone and many people have survived it. My brother was diagnosed with a very aggressive type of brain cancer about 4 years ago an they gave him 2 years. Very hard to treat and not many people are successful beating it. He's been cancer free after some intense radiation and chemotherapy treatments. Hope is not loss, stick in there. He was treated by Doctors in the Philadelphia area at Fox Chase.

Oh man....Really sorry to hear that....but try be as positive as you can. They've made tremendous strides in Cancer treatment, just in the last few years! (None of my business of course but you should tell your wife. She has a right to know & facing Cancer all alone is not a good thing for anyone)
(Keep us advised & you'll have allot of guys here pulling for you......Don't hesitate to post if you just want to talk!))

Hey Rick, keep the faith man! My 24 year old daughter had Thyroid cancer last year... I felt the same way. Shock, disbelief, denial, but most of all I was just plain scared. :(

She is now doing fine and in total remission. :) I know nothing of cancer of the eye, but early detection and treatment is a good thing (plus the brain is a very powerful organ, as already said keep a positive outlook as much as possible). You will be in my prayers, hang in their buddy, and as Devil said let your family know, this is no thing to go through alone. I know that I would have been more upset if my daughter had kept me in the dark even for a few days.

Sorry to hear about your eye. I'll say some prayers that it's only in that eye and removal will be the end of the problem. Life with one eye is no problem.

Tell your wife. She can see it in your face anyway.

Write anytime you need to vent.

Just talking things through can be a very good thing.

Little Story:

When I turned 30 I was going through a tough phase of my life, but I had never learned to confide in anyone.....including my wife. I started to see a psychologist, who was a young, sharp guy & had me pegged right away! He used to call me "John Wayne" because he knew I had a warped image of what a "Man" should be & that image was the false image of a movie "tough-guy" who could handle everything himself & needed no one! He (the psychologist) attributed this to my father having died when I was eleven years old & me growing up believing that I needed to be the "Man of the House" now & setting unachievable expectations for myself.
What I am trying to say is that you need to talk with your family & anyone else that can help you over a very tough hurtle.
Don't make the same stupid mistake that I used to make.

End of sermon!

I concur with the others in the group. Great strides in the treatment and therapy,(Just ask my wife. She has been doing the breast cancer shuffle for the last year. We are sort of weird so we came up with different phrases for the different phases. The chemo brain one is a good one, need to right everything down at that stage cause your gonna forget everything. Of course I used that to my advantage, lol). We are here for you more than you know. Don't hesitate to ask anything. Wife is, er was, a med. tech at Hershey med. for 33 yrs.

I can only imagine how you must feel. I echo what others have said. Stay positive. Consider a second opinion also. Doctors are NOT infalable. I'm glad the forum was here for you to "tell someone". It's good to have a support network of coal burning brothers.
