Allegheny RS96, Pocono or Channing

PostBy: Dans58 On: Tue Jul 01, 2008 3:35 pm

I am about to buy a new stove. I think that I've narrowed my choices down to the: Reading Allegheny RS96, Leisure Line Pocono, or Alaska Channing 3. The prices are: Channing 3 $1595 (seams like a deal), Allegheny RS96 $2199 and includes one ton of coal, and Pocono $2270. Basically, I am just planning to add supplemental heat to my house so that the oil furnace doesn't run as much. Also, I may want to run a hot water coil into the stove in the future and wondered if that would impact the choice.
It seems like the Channing 3 is what I'm probably going to buy, but I'm new to coal heat and would appreciate any advice you all can give.

Since i own one, i am going to say Leisure Line Pocono. Think i paid $2200 so your price is good considering inflation and all. You will be better off buying something soon as the rush is on!

1595 is a steal. Is this without a direct vent?

Yes, the $1595 is without direct vent. I think they said the direct vent would be about $500 more.

Don't forget that the LeisureLine stoves come with the super-nice Coal Trol digital thermostat/stoker controler,, I think the retail on the Coal Trol is around $4-500 ??? Please contact Coal Trol to confirm this.. and to discuss the advantages of using a digital stoker controller..

I'm not sure you are comparing apples to apples: isn't the Pocano a higher BTU output than the other two stoves??? Not sure.. I think the Pioneer models from LL are comparable..

Personally I'd stay away from the Reading products... the fit and finish, quality of the welds make them look cheap. and they use the old design tri-burner stoker.. the Tri Burner can be updated to the newer design with an additional blower and some good linkage,, Matthaus has some photos of the upgraded Triburner stoker fans..
