I'm looking at buying a coal stove and was wondering what you do with the ash? Is it good in the garden?

In the winter, I actually dump a little in the gravel driveway, dump some in front of the mailbox where the postman drives up to, sprinkle some on the sidewalk for traction, but mostly I just pour it over the embankment next to my yard. Spread it out some and it kind of disappears over time.

I dump mine deep in the woods. I don't think it's good for any plants, etc)

I actually found the other thread about what to do with ash. Thanks for the ideas. There seem to be few people in Colorado who burn coal.

Mix it with cement.

Build coal bins with it.

I'll probably do to it what I do to my wood ashes. Throw over my bank in the woods.

I empty my ash cans in the cornfield behind my house, doesn't seem to do any harm or good.

Now we'll know who to blame if there's a salmonella outbreak from corn  :P

Anthracite coal ash is basically inert: it provides no benefit; or, harm. It's really just benign filler material. Mixing with cement to make concrete would be one interesting use. I've also heard a nice thick layer works great for building side walks and patios when properly compacted. I wouldn't recommend adding it to any gardening/planting soil... Although, I've heard of adding it to soil for growing tomatoes... I've never tried it...

I let it cool in a metal bushel basket for the week.

Before tending to baby boiler again I dump it in a double ( sometimes single - depends on the load) garbage bag and place it gently in the "ash" can that the city truck picks up every Thursday morning from the curb in front of my little house. 8-)

heres a good one. I let my "buddy" park his boat in my barn all winter , of course for free. when he put it there I told him to have insurance in case something happens and he will not be able to get it out till the ground is dry. friday april 4th rains all day. saturday he shows wanting to get the boat. i'm in bed (long story there) so I tell him try to back up to the barn , if you start to sink , you will have to come back. well he wanted that dam boat now. I get up couple hours later and look out my window. looks like a war went on. lol *censored* ruts all over the place. he got new boards out of the barn for traction after he was moving the boat. finally gets to the drive , swings and rips my mail box out. I call him up and say what you do and bitched him out. after 25 years knowing this guy , he tells me he dosen't want to be my friend anymore.lol he didn't want to fix my yard. well my ash came in real handy. :D my boys filled the ruts with ash and used the grade box on the tractor to level it off. had get some dirt from the back to get it smooth. it just don't pay to be nice to people.

I'm saving mine in a big pile, I don't know whether to fill in the swamp or build a monument with it.

I plan on making a pile then once or twice a year take it to camp and use it on the dirt road as fill.

Ken.... no good deed goes unpunished!

This thread is a couple days old but check with your local Transfer (dump) station. The one near me takes in ashes and the like from wood, coal, and pellet stoves. Otherwise if you have a gravel driveway I use it for that. Helps with traction.
