At face value that may be true but in reality he did support a G.I. bill just not the one that was passed.

It's true that McCain didn't vote yes on this bill. It's also true he didn't vote no on this bill. In fact he wasn't even there to vote on this bill at all.

After the bill was approved and sent to Bu$h, Georgie thanked and praised McCain for his leadership in getting this bill passed.

Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) announced his support today for a popular veterans' education proposal after the bill was tweaked to allow soldiers to transfer the benefits to family members. That change, McCain contends, will provide incentive for troops to remain in uniform longer -- a provision he says is vital for an all-volunteer military.

That was right before it was voted on.

“There are fundamental differences,” McCain told Politico. “He creates a new bureaucracy and new rules. His bill offers the same benefits whether you stay three years or longer. We want to have a sliding scale to increase retention. I haven’t been in Washington, but my staff there said that his has not been eager to negotiate.”

Translation: Giving GI's fewer benefits when they leave the armed forces is a good thing, according to Bush & McCain. Fewer benefits makes it harder for them to actually leave, thus we have more soldiers. Devil we already went over this but I'll reiterate anyway. Those soldiers are volunteers, if they don't like the payout or the risks that come with it they could seek employment elsewhere. Just like any other job they are being offered incentives to stay or rewards for longer enlistments. An experienced employee is much more valuable than 2 unexperienced employees hence the reason experience and time get you a better pay and more benefits.

I don't think being a US Serviceman, in time of war, is just like any other job. I think we Americans have always held these brave men & women in higher regard than a hamburg flipper or a used car salesman. They are keeping us free by risking their lives for us on a daily basis &, therefore, we owe them more than just the "Lip Service" that this administration shamelessly gives them while sending them for their third or forth tour of duty to a war zone, extending their tour length from 12 to 15 months & denying them much needed benefits upon their retirement.

What is it that you think is not good enough? They are getting there housing costs and college tuition paid for 4 years.

I'd have to look at both GI Bills, side by side to answer your question Richard, but it is undeniable that Sen. Webb's bill gave retiring GI's many more benefits than does the bill backed by Bush & McCain & signed into law..... Even Sen. McCain admits that. ( & for which John McCain was too busy campaigning to even show up for the vote in the Senate!) Understandable for a National Guard "Goldbricker" who's daddy got him into the Guard to avoid war service in Vietnam & was AWOL for much of his service, but absolutely inexcusable for a Vietnam vet & ex POW who "claims" to support our troops!
(sorry but I relish any opportunity to bash Bush!........What am I going to do if Obama actually wins in November???......I'll have no reason to complain on political threads!!.......Another reason for you all to vote for Obama!! )

A senator announcing his support for a bill is meaningless, unless he actually shows up for work to vote for it. That is taking credit for work someone else has done and just paying lip service to try to hide the fact that when he bothered to vote, he voted against almost every GI bill improvement that has come up for vote.

And by the way, he was against it before he was for it.

Let's face it Beemrboy him showing up for the vote is meaningless as it was going to pass with or without his vote. Legislators miss votes all the time, especially one running for the President:

If y'all don't know what all the benefits are for vets and "retired" vets, how can y'all put yourself into a position to judge how a candidate or politician votes pertaining to those benefits? Do your research. Stop listening to partial truths from the mass media clowns. Personally, I would absolutely love more benefits...but don't think for a second that I would be happy to find out that little Johnny recieved the same benefits as me for only doing 3 or 4 years instead of 20+.
