I'd agree to some point but if this spying saves the lives of thousands or millions then what? It's really a tough question as to what is enough government intrusion in our lives. It's not something thats unprecedented, just look at the crap Herbert Hoover pulled thats just coming to light in the last few decades. As I said i doubt this is the first time things like this have happened and it certainly won't be the last.

If you really want to be concerned about intrusion on your privacy look to companies like Google, they by far have more information than anyone on the planet. The logs for the youtube case you mentioned in the other thread amount to something like 10 terabytes... considering its just plain text and probably compressed that's an enormous amount of information. to put it into perspective the database for this site is about 15MB's compressed and that includes a few MB's of PM's. 10TB's is enough room to store more than 650,000 copies of the text in this forum.

Now if I deleted all the Exxon remarks by Devil it would be enough for 650,001.

What concerns me is the ease of getting a top secret security clearance.

"Every passing week, it becomes more apparent that disgruntled leftists in the intelligence community and antiwar crusaders in the mainstream media, annealed in their disdain for the Bush administration, are undermining our ability to win the War on Terror. Their latest body blow to the war effort is the exposure, principally by the New York Times, of the Treasury Department’s top-secret program to monitor terror funding."

Spoken like a man who has never had any type of security clearance, has no clue of the real world, never done anything for his country & gets all his info from Sean Hannity & Fox News as he sits safely in front of his PC. :box: Bravo!!

It doesn't Richard. Our government had all the tools it need under the old FISA laws, including the ability to instantly wiretap & then goto court later for a judicial wiretap authorization. What Bush has done is become the King of the US. (admittedly with the acquiescence of the Democratic party of cowards!)

Google can't misuse that info & have people fired who are perceived as being disloyal to Bush ((US Attys) or throw people in Prison with no access to the courts.

Unloading mail bags for the Post Office hardly qualifies one as a security expert. (nor is an employee ID badge a security clearance....McDonald's employees wear ID badges  )
Enough of this line of argument. You have a right to your opinions, no matter how misguided.

To put security clearances in perspective check out the United States portion of http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Security_clearance. I've had them all except the polygraph. I refused it, much to intrusive and subject to non-objective interpretation.

I say again the public should be alarmed. Here's John Dean's take on it:

Agree about the intrusiveness of the polygraph test but it's "required" if you want to get/keep a DEA job as a Special Agent.

Not what I did, not even a good guess. Also never said I was a security expert.

Do you think a government official leaking top secret info to the NYT or any other news organization especially when it threatens our national security, is qualified to hold a security clearance?

"it becomes more apparent that disgruntled leftists in the intelligence community and antiwar crusaders in the mainstream media, annealed in their disdain for the Bush administration, are undermining our ability to win the War on Terror."

I was trying to end this pissing match but if you insist:

Do you mean like Bush & Cheney outing an undercover CIA Agent to the press (Robert Novak) to get at a political enemy.....in time of war?... Another felony, BTW.(For which Cheney's chief of staff was convicted in federal court. ........Let's see....How much time has Scooter Libby served of his sentence?.....Oh...right.......NONE thanks to Bush commuting his sentence to buy his continued silence!
Bush will, of course wait until near the end of his term before he grants Libby a full pardon for his crimes against the US.....Always the coward!
