I've read here that the Hitzer 5093 hopper can be removed. The dealer that I'm talking to about this stove says that it cannot burn Bituminous coal or wood. Soft coal will burn up the hopper and the hopper comes down into the firebox too far to burn anything other than kindling. I'd like to hear from someone who is using this stove. Can the hopper be removed? Can you burn soft coal and wood in it? Is the blower option worth the extra cash?

If not will the Hitzer 354 do the job I'm looking for?

Everyone on this forum is incredibly helpful and I greatly appreciate all your answers and info in my quest for a coal stove! I just do want to spend a lot of money on a stove and freight that isn't going to work out for us. It's really hard to buy these things on the phone and thru email! Sheesh!

Janesway, you cannot burn bituminous coal in a hopper feed, your dealer is correct.. the bituminous coal will burn up into the hopper.. Call Hitzer direct and ask them about removing the hopper in their stoves with hoppers.. I'm sure you can use wood and bituminous in the model with a removable hopper,, I'm just not sure which one it is..

The Hitzer folks are great people, very helpfull and will talk with customers direct,

The smaller 30-95 hopper is removeable, the larger 50-93 is not, unless something has changed from a year ago.

I bought a Hitzer 50-93 last fall. And unless they have changed something. I cannot remove my hopper.
