Interesting article in a Syracuse NY newspaper. Also did a search and found some info on it. Wonder if you could use anthracite?? :idea:

Yes, the Anthracite coal would be a better form of carbon than the wood to charcoal. A similar process was used to make coke from coal at steel mills that make steel from iron ore. Not done in the US anymore because the process smells awful.

Just to let you know one of the biggest coke plants there is, is at Clairton, Pa. & it runs pretty clean. Years ago not even a weed would grow on the hillside across the river from it & now it`s a semi nature reserve. U.S.Steel pipes the extra gas to their other plants that are still in the mon-valley in West Mifflin & Braddock to use in the furnaces. A lot has changed thru the years but some thinks don`t change too much.
