Kodiak Stoker- Pro's and Con's

Kodiak Stoker- Pro's and Con's

PostBy: Linc On: Sun Jul 20, 2008 8:10 pm

I have a chance to pick up an old Alaska Kodiak Stoker stove and I was wondering about the pro's and con's of an old unit like this? The price tag seems quite reasonable at $300. I hope to be able to give it a good looking over tomorrow. Are replacement parts readily available? Would coal-trol work with this stove?

Thanks in advance for any and all replies, comments and suggestions.

Unless it looks like it was recovered from the Titanic, buy it.. everything is fixable.. the motors are available. the grates are available. and as long as all the parts are there that is a very reasonable price..

Things to try or check, but not deal-killers.. plug it in,, the distribution fan should run, and the stoker motor should run, the stoker mechanism should move back and forth. Look at the grate, it should not have cracks burnt in the side-walls of the grate.. new ones are available, but it is an expense...doors open and close,, you wil need to replace the rope gaskets on the doors, the ashpan [s] intact or rusted out. The glass in the door cracked and discolored [doesn't matter even if cracked,, just all the pieces there].

Hope this helps..

From the pics I have seen of it, it is in pretty good shape. Some exterior surface rust and the grate is a bit rusty as well as the inside of the fire box. It appears to be in better condition than the Kast Konsole that Wood'n coal rebuilt. I was told that it has been refurbished but not as to when it was done. Mechanically,I guess I'll find out tomorrow.

Linc, if it is in usable condition, don't hesitate,, those sell for $1200 on ebay after a paint job and with new glass and gaskets..

Thanks Greg. I'm pretty sure that I will be buying it as long as the mechanics work. If they don't then maybe I can talk them down in price.LOL. Do you know if there may be a pdf or some other source to get a copy of the owners manual?

Here are pics of the stove. (I hope this works)

When Matthaus gets out of the Hospital, pm him and he can help.. he has refurbed several Alaska stoves.. I'm sure he has some literature or can give some verbal help.

I looked over and bought the stove today. The couple has had it for 2 years and never hooked it up. Everything is there and it all works. Now the fun begins. :D

Thanks Stokin and Greg. I am very pleased with my purchase. I really didn't need another project but this will be quicker and easier than the 63 Scotty that I'm going to rebuild. Even my wife is happy about getting this stove. :D
