Both my daughters' homes are heated with propane here in SE Mass. (one just bought a coal stove) Does anyone know what propane is selling for now & what the cost is projected to be this winter for Mass?

I paid $3.29/gal. back in April, but I only use it for my gas fireplace and the stand by generator so the rate's higher. I'm sure like everything else, the price will only be goinig up :taz: :mad2:

I'm not really sure but we have one gas company up by us that always has a sign out front that says the price for heating oil. From my understanding they don't sell oil only propane gas so if the price is correct then their's was $4.29 the last time I drove by it.

$3.29 is cheap! I don't use much propane and pay almost $5 a gallon. I have a buddy that has three 1,000 gallon tanks so he probably get's the best price going. Last week he paid $3.12.

I thought Pa. was bad until I read your post. Just got my tank filled for $2.99 per gal. From what I understand most of the areas propane comes out of Canada & with you being closer transportation costs should be less. From doing some searching the price is the lowest in late july thru aug. I know last year I was paying a lot more on their auto delivery during the winter months. Now with the coal furnace this will be the first full winter so I`ll be able to recoup some of the investment.

Does anyone know how propane is transported, where it comes from and therefore the regional differences in pricing??? Other than the obvious, that if people wil pay the price, then the sellers will charge it..

Propane in my area, SE Michigan is $2.39 /gallon right now,, the highest was about a month ago and then it was $2.44. My supplier lists his prices on the internet.. the other suppliers you have to call and answer 20 questions to get an answer.. and weed through 'first time price', contract price, prebuy price etc. My current supplier is still the least expensive..

Does all propane get shipped in on ships?? maybe because of my proximity to the great lakes this makes my price less??? But that doesn't explain SE Mass. prices almost a dollar more.. ???

Pricing goes by (what the market will bare) + taxes. We really don't now what the taxes are.We know the sales tax but there are transportation taxes for trucks, ships, barges and so on.How much are the taxes on a tank farm? There are so many hidden taxes all we know is that we're getting screwed  .RANT OVER!
DON
PS. Is there a tax on pipelines? We don't know that either.

Whatever the price is it's a ripoff. The only fuel supplier that I know of who adjusts their prices according to how much you use.

Imagine the electric company charging a higher rate if your usage falls below a certain KWH?

Last year they sent me a bill for $50.00 saying I didn't use enough propane and they were going to charge me a fee for that :wtf: I told them come get your tank off my property :rambo:

They actually do that here for NG and electric. Different class rates for different users.
Actually just about every thing is that way; the more units you purchase the cheaper the unit cost will be, until you approach the actual production cost.
The breakers give a discount at 20 and 100 ton.

I just remembered they do that here for electricity as well.

Propane is still a ripoff either way.

We have a cottage on a small pond. It uses propane for cookstove and heat (but only until the woodstove kicks in). We only use about 20 gallons a year, but I wanted a 100 gallon tank becuase there's no winter access. I offered to buy the tank, and they were willing to sell it, but told me I'd have to bring it in every 10 yrs for inspection at my expence. Five yrs ago we agreed to a $1 a month rental and I'm on will call. Now the rental is about $45 a yr. The beauty is..... if we go over 13 months without calling we get a postcard in the mail: "We noticed you haven't filled lately..." and always offer some no brainer deal for a cheap fill up.
Here at home is where we get shafted. Maybe I should look into buying a 100 lb tank for here.
