Knowing that a lot of you guys on this fourm live and work in NEPA,I thought this would be a helpful thread so that people know what coal is available and where at the breakers.Looks like this season will be interesting as far as supply goes.I have a friend of mine getting me some nut coal from superior when they start with their winter hours(Saturdays).I hope he can get it.He gets 5 ton at a time.

There a lot of people burning stoker stoves and stoker boilers that use rice size coal.. fewer using Nut, pea and buckwheat.. Eventually the breakers will run some pea and nut through the breaker and make more buck and rice.

My dealer locally has quite a bit stocked (bulk) up along with quite a few pallets of bagged, and a storage shed full. just had 4.66 tons delivered a couple weeks ago.

I spoke with Superior this morning, they have run some pea through the breaker to make Rice.. Don't panic.. the coal producers need to sell their products.. so they will do what is necessary to supply their customers with what they need.

I just got off the phone with Rodger at Superior, he said his boss told him no coal is going outside of PA ! I've had my delivery scheduled with them originaly for July 24, they had no rice then and he said he would hold the price and get it to me in Aug. Now their saying nothings getting shipped outside PA. :wtf: I didn't ask about picking up but nothings getting trucked outside the state, they can't meet their demands for their regular dealers as it is.

UpDate on Superior coal As of Today they will not be shipping any coal of any size out of state local customer's only
They do not have enough Mine Run / Raw coal to supply everyone that wants coal There mines only can mine so much
coal The demand for ther product is at a all time high If there was more mines opened then they could sell more but
as it is Now they can not both Lori & Roger told me to tell all on this forum Please do not call them for any more coal
for the rest of the year Lori is the owner's wife I can also say she is not happy with me for starting this Rush on there
coal You would think they would be grateful for the business However they are not they had alot of Problem's with the breaker in June & July and she told me it was hell So I guess you can blame me for not to beable to buy coal from them

However there are a few other good breaker's out there to buy from Summit Anthracite as good coal I am told Sherman
coal co. is Running a good product now & Calvin V. Lenig as a pretty good product Now but you have to watch there Rice coal when they are low or out of there own they buy from other's that are not so good UAE Harmony Mine is also not
selling anymore of there coal to New customer's only to local's with a Two ton limit on all sizes of there coal I was also
told by the owner of Summit Anthracite when the demand of there coal starts to be more then they can handel there will
be no out of state sale's or No new customer they are like every other breaker they will take care of there reguler
customer's first Local's come first So I am sorry for all of the Member's that wanted to buy coal from Superior coal Please do not call them for anymore coal I Hope I did not screw myself from getting my coal from them I have been buying from them since 1997 and they are my Favorite breaker I guess I will find out soon Take care all and good luck getting coal

I can personally vouch for the tight supply situation at the breakers. In the past the breakers and mines didn't have much trouble keeping up with demand, especially this time of year. Now they ALL are experiencing tremendus demand. The good thing is a lot of people are filling up, or at least placing orders for coal now instead of in November. That being said the Sherman Breaker is putting out good coal, I'm burning that now plus I work at the deep mine that supplies part of there coal. The rest of there coal comes from a strip mine near Giradville. Even the strip mined coal gets as low as 6% ash at times. The prepared coal is 9% ash and burns hot.

The # for Sherman is 570 695 2690. The coal is a white/red ash mix so it won't klinker to bad if it does at all. You won't find a excessive amount of rock or fines in it and it does burn hot. I have a stoker so I can't tell you how it burns in a handfired but it does burn well in a stoker. I had my boiler set for Calvin Lennings buck, approx a 2 inch ash ring around the pot and I was able to get a dark spot in the center like the EFM's. The whole summer the Boiler never hit the High Limit from just running on the timer which I have set to run 45 seconds every half hour. I started using the coal from Sherman for no other reason than we sell our raw coal to them from the mine I work at. Once the boiler was running on straight Sherman It would hit the High Limit from just running on the timer. I didn't change my settings at all and I didn't loose the fire either. I do have a slightly bigger ash ring (about 3 inches) and the dark spot just about went away. Take it for what it's worth but that's my experience with there coal.

Coal and especially rice may be hard to come by from some suppliers this winter I fear. Many of these breakers are small operations that already have a customer base and are able to sell all of their product. With winter coming on I suspect they are trying to protect their loyal customer base that they had for many years. It would probably not go over well if their regulars could not get coal because the last of it just went out of state on a tractor-trailer. That's just my thoughts. It sounds simple to think why not just mine more coal, if only it were that easy. There is a breaker near by just sitting there not doing much because he can't find any coal to process through it. The feds are such A-holes that no one wants to open anymore deep mines. All this while oil is what? about $4 a gallon or more. The crisis continues....
