Good that is what I was thinking.
The cumulative effects of everything in the chimney need to be determined so I will look for a good spot to tap the firebox.
Thanks for the link!

Congrats on the arrival, mine arrived last week. Still in the garage and as soon as I have time I'll get the installation underway. We'll have to compare notes.

Your installation looks very similar to mine. I will be running a single wall liner up the chimney. The dealer that I purchased my unit from recommended it.

Best of luck, I'll be interested in how you make out with it.

Got mine yesterday, too. I actually got a discount for picking it up only 45 minutes away. I told the shop I was concerned with weight carrying it in the house and had also contacted Hitzer and asked what could be removed. They took out the firebrick, off with the door, grates, hopper door, pan. I had a 5 man contingent ready. Not knowing what to expect, we began sliding it out the back of a pickup truck and 2 big guys grabbed it and carried it in themselves! It's sitting on the hearth waiting for a guy I work with to install it!

Don't you love it when you are standing there, trying to figure out what and who to assign to lift and carry, and two big guys walk up and carry it away.. Ah to be young again!!

hi guys

Hitzer are now sold out and backordered to Jan 2009 for the 503 insert so factory direct is no longer an option as of today at least. Super nice people by phone -I am in NY city suberbs so it is such a breath of fresh air to call and get someone nice on the other end. If they had them in stock they would have shipped. Am looking at $2400 here for the 503. Spoke with a dealer out of town last night who has it for $2100 plus shipping. Still a great deal if I can send less money to Saudi Arabia for winter oil ! Congrats on those who got the stove for the various prices mentioned.

I just called Hitzer myself to order an extra ash pan and see about my delivery date. Apparently the Big Crush hit them the second or third week in July. It looks like mine got squeaked in a week or two before that. It's expected to be delivered in the next two weeks. Others aren't so lucky. My dealer placed another order on 7/23/08, and those stoves aren't expected to be delivered until 2/09. Wow. I wouldn't want to have 3.6 tons of anthracite ($1,000+) in my garage AND have to tell the Mrs. that we'll still be paying as usual for heating oil until February. Would have been Divorce City at worst, Bankruptville at best. Even with the two-week timeframe from Hitzer, I won't rest easy until it's delivered and installed.

On the plus side, the extra ash pan was only $22.50 plus shipping. I wanted one because I plan to rotate them. I can put the clean pan in the stove for the next round of ash after I remove the full pan and carry it to the basement to cool and empty. Hopefully this will help cut down on dust in the living room if I'm careful....

just ordered the last 503 in stock from local dealer and will pick up this week. Thanks to JafaDog and CapeCoaler for assistance with measurments.

Two questions -

1. The apron that covers the gap around the stove and fireplace opening - are these sold separately by Hitzer or they are generic from any hearth dealer ?
2. I got a Gold door - would prefer black - does anyone know if it is possible to change that

thanks

I ordered directly from the factory and;
It came with the standard 6" surround no extra charge.
Larger is available but extra.
The doors are available in plain black as in my pictures.
Maybe some one will swap you a plain black for the spiffy one you have.
The extra trim work is an up charge so your shiny door is more expensive.
The surround bolts on so it is not a generic part.
Is the dealer saying the surround is extra?

Cape'

no dealer didn't say it was extra so if it comes as standard then I should be in good shape - will pick up this week. Definately am up for a swap if anyone has a black one in new condition. Gold is obviously a personal choice but for me I like the black better.

thanks for info !

It comes with the standard 6" surround (two side pieces and a top piece). You will need at least 2" of coverage all the way around, meaning the surround will need to overlap the brick at least 2" on all sides. This is so you can have an adequate layer of insulation around the insert to keep air from entering the firebox from the living space. The insulation goes between the surround and the brick to form the seal. I've read that some 503 owners have even caulked the bottom front of the insert (where there is no insulated surround) to keep air from entering there. I think they used high temp silicone caulk or some other kind of heat resistant material.

2. I got a Gold door - would prefer black - does anyone know if it is possible to change that

When I ordered mine, the gold door was a $172 option, and the brass trim for the surround was a $53 option. I thought the brass trim for the surround was too over-the-top visually, but I actually like the look of the gold door better (matches the brass around the blower exhaust vents), but I think my wife either didn't like it or thought it was too much $. I'll ask her again. If she likes it, maybe we can trade doors! :)

Keep in mind that the gold on the door is REAL gold. It will scratch VERY easily!

Hitzer, Dean, Liners and info

PostBy: VanBuren On: Thu Aug 28, 2008 1:34 pm

Just got off the phone with Dean @ Hitzer - I told him he had groupies out there on the net of faithful Hitzer owners who had spoken with him at some point and thought I'd post a few things that I learned. Firstly and as others have mentioned, Dean is a SUPER nice guy - what a gentleman - he is actually a manager there and becuase of current demand he is on the floor welding. Well deserved influx of buisness though for sure.

I got my stove yesterday last one in stock in NYC area that I could find. I was looking for a recommended brand of liner as there are many to choose from. he said they stock and use Forever Flex by olympia so that sounds like a likely good choice. I was concerned about the seal between the stove and the liner. He said a lot of people worry about that and he says it is unimportant. In fact he has a stove in his house for 20 odd years with nothing more than the stove itself - gas is going to rise up unless you have a blockage. An obsession therefore with a air tight seal is just not that important he says.

I had questions on the three controlable parts of the stove i.e. ash pan, door and damper. He said in most cases and in his own stove, the damper is all the way in i.e. closed to the max possible. when lighting up you can open it more. This would be in line with the plate that people installed I think before the newer model

The ash pan vent is controlable and you learn what you like with trial and error very quickly.

the air wash vent under the door is two fold. It allows air on top of the coal and keeps the glass clean but will be almost closed for most people. he said in the event one were to burn wood in this stove, and for the record not something he can officially endorse so it is only IF you chose to !, then wood requires more air to burn and hence this vent would be more important.

Most likley a lot of people know all of the above but in the event someone may not as was the case with me until 30 mins ago then it may be good to have on record.

Finally Dean said they would love to be on the forums providing further assitance but time simply does not permit based on their back orders thru Feb 09. He complemented leisure line for thier contributions on the forum.

I will post some photos of my stove in coming days on this thread also - hopefully CapeCoaler will not think I hijacked his thread but I think it good to have as much information on one model in a single thread

Dean @ Hitzer if you ever get to read this, thanks so much again for your time today

My bother-in-law just had a Hitzer 983 insert installed (by a Hitzer dealer) a month ago and thats exactly what they did. They closed up the ash dump and pushed the insert in then put the insulated shroud on to close up around the insert. The dealer assured him that he will have no problems with it. I was thinking that wasn't gonna be good. I was thinking of talking him into pulling it back out and figering out a way to get a liner in up past the smoke shelf and sell it off. But after reading your post it dosn't sound like there's anything to worry about.

Always have a couple of working CO alarms.
I will take plenty of pictures for the liner install, including the deconstruction of the pesky metal damper assembly.
The more info everyone puts into the threads the better, why reinvent the wheel!

as mentioned some photos showing other aspects of stove not already posted. Limit of 5 pics per post. 503 with gold door. The apron position is ajustable several inches which in turn means you could put stove deeper into hearth slightly up to the back line of the hopper.
