CapeCoaler

thanks for update - informative as always. Hope you get good weather for installation today - going to be wet down here in NY. thanks for info on flexibility - sounds like .006 is perfect choice for all of us.

In ref to the foil
Need Metal Foil Tape...

you are using this just for the insulation right i.e. you don't plan on using tape for any of the liner joints ?

hope work calms down a little for you so you can focus on your project at hand - a noble one for sure !

Foil tape is to wrap insulation blanket every 12" so there is no 'creep' while the sock is pulled over the liner.

CapeCoaler,

did you consider using a part like this for the damper area instead of cutting - any downside you are aware of to not use this and then convert back to round ? It reduces to 4.2 inches

The liner is down the chimney and capped at the top!
So let me say from experience...
If I were to do it a second time...
Appliance adapter 6" round to 7"oval ...
The 7" oval pipe five feet...
7" oval to 6" round liner adapter...
They sell it as a kit for $132...
Buy it, worth every penny. 8-)
Insulating the round liner...
Was no problem.
Getting it past the enlarged damper hole...
Not so much.

The Sawzall and electric hammer/chisel solved the problem...
Remove top two rows of brick, cut out the rest of the damper back....
Half the smoke shelf...
Good thing it will not be seeing any wood fires for the next 20 years!

The foil tape is needed as the kit supplied tape was only 25'...
Not enough to wrap every foot and do a butt seam lap.
Needed to buy extra worm clamps to secure the mesh top and bottom.
It is a 3 person install...
One on the bottom directing/pulling...
The smarter one...
Two up top because the sucker is like an anaconda...
Good balance and strength needed here...
It takes the second install to make it go smooth!
Got some pictures will post them soon.

Foil tape is to secure insulation blanket to the liner ...
After you spray some adhesive to the pipe and blanket...
Got good pics of that!
There is no joint in this install, one 25' run...
The next one I do will be with the oval adapter!
The worm clamps work...

Mutual of Omaha's Wild Kingdom : Picture Marlin Perkins standing on the ground instructing his sidekick Jim who is on the roof. "I will stay down here out of Jim's way while he gets the beast, all 25' under control. Look out Jim he is starting to get wrapped around your chest! "

Glad you got it finished. Looking forward to the pics.

Cape - nice summary - as always great info. Where is the above kit for $132 - I don't see it - I just see components adding up to more - can you post the link please. I may get away with no cutting or brick removal

sounds like you learned a great deal - appreciate the on going detail

many thanks

Marlin Perkins he was the smart one!
It was not quite that bad...
But you do have to be careful..
Because the pipe has a mind of its own...
You have to work with the pipe...
Come to an understanding of sorts...
The pipe does not go willingly...
But eventually submits.
http://www.chimneylinerdepot.com/
The kit is not listed on the web site...
You have to call for that little package of joy...

Some thoughts:
When wrapping the liner pick a spot where you can get out of without many turns.
Good light and a dry clean floor, anything but dirt or grass.
Extra hands to help when wrapping to stabilize the liner.
Do the install on a low wind day!
The pull cone and a good pull rope will save the day.
Go slow, be careful and start early!
Patience, Patience, Patience and some more Patience.
A Sawzall, 4.5" grinder with a grinding and cut-off disk and the electric hammer chisel are crucial to making the job go well when every thing goes to hell!
If you do not want to destroy/major league modify the firebox use a 5 foot section of oversize oval and the appropriate adapters.
I did find out why water was not going into the firebox...
They never back filled the open space behind the firebrick...

Cape

thanks for info - I'll give George a call in ref to the kit - great tip.

so if I go with that setup which is perfect for my needs I'd attach the oval liner to the round liner using the 7 to 6 connector you describe and pass the entire thing from the chimney top downward and through the narrow throat and connect to stove.

By using the pulling cone as you suggest, I will put some pressure on the 7" oval to 6" round liner connector. Would the connection be strong enough to sustain some pulling downward - you say the worm clamps are good but is the seal in jeopardy if I am pulling downward. As plan B I could trim the 5 ft part to a few feet and connect in the smoke chamber

thanks as always !

One does not really need to pull...
More to wiggle the nose off of any 'snags'...
The top guys/gals are pushing it down...
The bottom person is directing it with a slight downward force...
Face shield or full goggles are necessary...
Make sure the oval section fits down the flue...

With insulation/tape/mesh/worm clamp it would be better to see if 7.5" will pass...
Bubble wrap makes a nice test form...
makes different shapes....

Cape'

did you drill extra holes in the collar for the adaptor or you just used the existing one with cement ? I assume 2 more ~ if you did ?

thanks

Three Screws!
I think it will be easier to...
Attach the adapter to the stove...
Then slip the liner into the adapter...
Must play with that one first...
Either way I want three screws into that bad boy!
