No problem with them at all. They are also a dealer for LL and Alaska. Just picked up an Alaska Cast Console from them. It was in stock and I needed one for the SIL now, didn't want to wait. They can wheelbarrow it to the bin if needed.

My dad just got 4 tons of rice from them to fill his bin. I know they have a Blaschak sign on their building but don't know who their bulk supplier is.

You can also check the Pottstown Roller Mills. I think they stock, stove, pea, and rice in bulk. They also have Blaschak in bags. They get their bulk coal near Tamaqua but wouldn't give me the exact breaker name. When I asked them, their first question was "Why, are you having problems ?? " I told them no I just wanted to know who's coal I was burning and then told them about this forum. I wanted to report to the forum members on what coal I was burning.

JRN,

I have had no problems with the coal from either dealer mentioned.
However I do not weigh the ash as some others here do. I burn it and I am warm. That is all I need to know. There is not a lot of clinkers either in the ash. Maybe some day I'll have the time to accurately measure their coal against others but for now, I just want to be warm and not pay a lot for it.

Rick

Hi. I bought my boiler there and have had no problems. I found this forum after I installed the boiler and learned about different grades of anthracite coal. I asked the one Lutz brother if there coal is strip mined? He said "NO! This is deep mine coal, not that boot leg shlt". :D That mad me feel better.

That would be a contradictory statement though. "Bootleggers" typically refer to the small family operations. ;) Strip mines require an enormous investment in surface equipment, specifically the dragline.

I agree, most 'bootleg' mines are small deep-mines.. Strip mining takes tons of equipment and many employees.

The Lutzs' have a good reputation for quality coal. They have always been a good company to deal with.

Yeah, it seems so, they told me that in 80 years they have never run out of coal and have always met customer demand at any time of the year those past 80 years..they seem on the ball.....they say their coal is blaschak...guess there is no way of knowing if it is deep mined or not....looks nice regardless....makes that nice glass sound when you throw it on itself...did have to pick out one nut size chunk, small roots and a few very small rocks...

I bought pea coal from them last year and was very satisfied. It was my first year with coal and it beats oil. Richard Lutz is the owner. He's been around and is hard working, appears honest, and will spend time with the customer. I bought an EFM boiler from him (still need to install) and I think I got a fair price. I called EFM and they know him by name. I know he drives a truck and gets the coal right from the mine. Can't recall the name of the mine but I think it's the same that Pottstown Roller Mill uses. My neighbor also burns coal and gets it from Lutz.

Regarding Lutz, many years ago I purchased a Surdiac Southport which burned pea coal. I got three tons from Lutz to start me off. I had lined the chimney and installed according to direction. I could hardly get this brand new stove to lite. After a week in October of additional trying with it,I called the dealer. The dealer blamed the coal, certainly not the stove. Lutz said cannot be bad coal. Finally, the dealer who would not come to my location , handed the problem off to the factory rep. Two of them came out and wanted to see the coal before they would even look at the stove. With a grim look on their faces they said ,"well it can't be the coal this is some of the best we have seen". They left without any conclusion saying it wasn't their stove and it wasn't the coal so it must be something else. Brilliant I thought. Then I got to really thinking about that grand worth of new useless stove sitting there and solved the starting problem myself.Long story short,I never had one minute of trouble from any of Lutz's coal. Out of the area now so I cannot get his coal these days, wish I could. Regards, Mike
