I am a new owner and have decided to add a HW coil. I have read that if you install horizontally rather than vertically, the coil should be tilted. The question is, how much tilt in inches from the top nipple to the bottom nipple?
Am I correct in assuming that the tilt is to facilitate the thermo-siphon effect?
Is "tilted horizontal" better than vertical and can you explain why?
Jerry advised to install about 5" to 6" above fire. Is this the hottest area of the stove? If not, why not nearer the top of the stove.
I am planning to install the Hot Air Jacket option. Does this combination create any particular problems?
Thanks for any info / insight to above.
This is a great site. I have already learned quite a lot about the "ins" and "outs" of burning coal in a stoker stove.

Vert with the water feed at the top.
Sothe water exits in the bottom which is the hottest part of stove.
5 to 6" aboue fire for max. temperature
do yourself a faviore and install unions and isolation valves for easy maintenance.

If you're going to install it horizontally the nipple only has to be an 1' or so higher. The higher nipple will have the hot water coming out of the coil so it should be piped to the top of the tank. The bottom nipple should be piped to the lower part of the tank.I am assuming that the coil is U shaped.Pitch the hot water line slightly up to the tank and the cold water inlet down to the bottom of the tank.
