How Long do we have?

Thank you Dick [Devil505]. All you answered is correct, including that our 180* opposed political views will not effect our friendship.

I've been backing off on my posting, trying to not answer every question when I first read it. The forum has increased in membership greatly and there are lots of other members who can answer the standard, often asked questions.. If after a day or so, I'll answer the questions if I can.

I'm aware of several 'work-welfare' systems, but often they get taken to court and dumbed-down till they are just a welfare system.. Yes, there certainly are tiems when a society needs to extend a helping hand to the needy. But like Trader said, too many people scam the system then you end up with 5 and 6 generations of a 'family' on welfare, unable to work sucessfully, un teachable. untrainable. A social disaster.. like what floated to the surface in New Orleans after Katrina.. What a mess.. I was embarassed to see that in our country.. it's a crying shame to see people in our country who are offered a free education who as adults can't speak english, or write or read.. and all because they just don't want to or don't need to.. just go to the welfare office, grunt a few times. and get on the dole.. and get paid to breed and breath.. and get disgustingly fat.. Did you see any skinny, underfed New Orleans folks in the news... nope, not a one.. that's the way it is in a welfare state,, the taxpayers are skinny, they are worked to the bone to pay their taxes and keep food on the table for their family,, but the welfare folks just hang out in front of the TV and eat and breed.

Gerg L.

BTW, I've collected unemployment twice in my life... both times were seriously demeaning, and depressing.. the first time so bad that I quite going to the Unemployment office even before I got another job.. I just couldn't stand it anymore..

Greg: You have some strong opinions on welfare. I wasn't suggesting we let 20 million immigrants have a free lunch. I believe many of these immigrants are in our country already but aren't paying taxes and some are using our school system to educate their kids. There is always two sides to a story and this is a complicated issue. Americans are lazy in nature so many of these immigrants are working jobs that Americans don't want anyway. Americans want it now and we don't want to work hard to get it. I see this in my classroom. The parents enable the children to be lazy and make excuses for their lack of effort. Parents want to be friends with their children so their is no discipline or accountability for the kids. We are our own undoing. Our laziness and greed will crush this nation unless we find leaders who can inspire other Americans to be the best they can be. I don't have enough information to debate the welfare system. I do know that it's a business like the justice system and many Americans depend on it for their jobs. If we eliminated welfare would these people pitch a tent next to your farm. Would they steal to survive. They could always get jobs at Wally world for 7.00 an hour but who will take care of their kids. I don't know the answers but I do think that scammers should be made examples of and this might help to deter further abuse of the system.

Greg, I agree with your last post.

Trader, I was about to disagree with yours when I read:

Americans are lazy in nature

but when I read further:

The parents enable the children to be lazy and make excuses for their lack of effort.

I agreed.

I don't think the right choice of leaders will make a bit of difference. This problem will not go away as long as the parents are setting this example for their children.

That is why I had my 7 year old son help me shovel 7 tons of coal into my bin yesterday. I told him if he wanted to be warm in the winter he needed to help me shovel now. Although he was in the way a lot and actually slowed me down he did shovel for several hours.

A good parent sets the example for their children.. when I was growing up, my dad would 'fix' the TV,, he's remove a tube and hide it somewhere.. I could either go buy one to replace it, or work on some around the house project and 'earn' the vacuum tube as 'wages'.. a bit different, but I learned very quickly the value of work and the value of time being productive..

I remember hiring a guy who was at least in his 40's, I was in my early 20's running a boat-sales rigging [predelivery option instalation] department.. I had 5 guys working for me.. the company owners had to OK my hiring and firing, but I basicly got what/who I wanted.. This 40 year old guy quit after two days.. he said to me when he quit, I can earn almost as much standing in line at the unemployment office and not get dirty or work so hard.. and he left.. He had no pride, personal or otherwise.. a product of the welfare system..

Yes I truely believe that the 'great society' that LBJ planted the seeds of in the 60's has been the downfall of work ethics, pride in your self and your work, and in general the american way of making a future for yourself and your family.. A socialist country with no capitalist incentive to improve yourself will soon die of it's own apathy.
