Where and how is the burner mounted ? Can any burner be used or is it something Special from Harman ? Would it run efficiently or just get by ?

It's mounted on the door. I don't have that option but I can't imagine it would work that well.

I orderd a VF3000 with that option but I didn't get the boiler yet.

as anyone who ever dealt with a Harman dealer knows they are of no help at all when it comes to the workings of a boiler.

I got conflicting answers on where and how the oil gun is mounted, Harmans brochure shows nothing about the oil gun but it does show it as an option.I don't think this dealer ever sold one with the oil option.

Some woman piped in on the issue like she knew what was up and said it mounted right in there where the stoker assembly is.I don't see how.

Bottom line is when you buy a Harman your, on your own because the dealer knows less than you about the product.

The factory don't even want to talk with the customer.

Why did I order a Harman? because it is all I could get for this heating season on short notice and my current oil boiler is shot.

Syncmaster, those are great pictures. I have seen the instructions for the oil kit, but never saw the actual assemblies. Is there a fiber board target that mounts on the opposite wall of the boiler, the instructions mention it, curious to see how large it might be.

Good luck with your install, how much is coal out on Long Island these days?

Highlander,
We do't have any mines but we have a few coal suppliers supplying the very large nurserys that use coal instead of oil.

because the vf3000 is reversable the unused door across from the oil burner needs to be insulated with the fire block supplied

IMG_1322.JPG

The block just sits in the opening of the unused access door . no glue, no screws, it just sits on the 2inch shelf

Thanks for the additional photos, Syncmaster. What I found interesting is that it looks like the factory welds the door panel permanently on the opposite side of the boiler when you order an oil kit. I guess they don't want people mounting the gun to the rear of the boiler instead of the front. You wouldn't be able to reverse the hopper and flue pipe, like I did with this arrangement.

No highlander if you look real close the weld dosen't touch the boiler wall... it looks like they welded another plate to the removable plate to double the thickness and have a lip when mounted to the boiler.

Thanks for takeing the time to put up those pictures, they answerd some questions I had about my boiler.

I checked with the dealer and mine has arrived. He said it is not at the store but another storage location.

I have one question . is the manual that came with the boiler seem helpful? I downloaded the VF-3000 manual from Harmans website and was thinking the one that came with the boiler may have more information.

The manual that comes with the boiler is the same as what you have.
I was thinking the same as you.... but all the info is there, it is just in nononsense 3rd grade form.

There are also some instruction sheets that come with the oil burner hardware

between the skimpy documentation and not being able to talk directly with a Harman tech I would never bought the VF3k but knowing I have great help from the guys on this forum Ifigured I will be OK.

Looking at the completed pictures that highlander and coalkirk posted really helps.

One thing I want to alert you to is there is no insulation under the sheet metal cover on the boiler.
I plan on adding insulation before installing the boiler and it should be real easy, but after the install it will be a real pain.

I think Harman still has their heads in heating with a stove..... the more heat radiated the better.

but if you are going to be running the VF3K all summer for DHW you wouldn't want all the excess heat off the boiler.

Thanks for the pictures, I'm trying to see if building my own mount for a oil gun would be practical.

here are some more pictures, the boiler comes with the regular door and you have to remove it and install the oil burner door from the oil burner kit.

it looks like the same door but with a 4-3/16" ID pipe welded in the center and 2 mico safety switchs.

one safety switch when you remove the sliding cover and one switch when the gun door is swung open.
