Did a 520 built in 56 use the same baffles as are being used today. Baffles I have found on my antiqure are some spiral interior tube flow guides and a cast iron baffle . I see no other baffles as described on modern day pictorial . Can anyone enlighten me ?

No. Not the same. The boiler design was changed several times of the past 60 years. They are probably turbulators/spinners, akin to the same used today in tube boilers, which increase efficiency. In a coal boiler, with flyash, they probably became a nuisance.

coalberner or scrapper can better answer your question.
