PostBy: greentjdude On: Fri Sep 05, 2008 10:09 am

i have a hand fired stove and i have no idea how or why the glass cracked just sitting in my basement (ill just blame the dog  ). do i have to replace it before using the stove or can it burn fine without any issues with the crack? i hope i can use it this year this way and replace it next summer, glass isnt cheap.

Mine center window cracked after I cleaned it up. The side windows cracked in the winter and just feel apart. I replaced them with steel plates 3/16" thick. I was going to get another plate to have on hand for the center , one incase it fell apart in the winter. I decided to break down and get some all new glass. The Robax place was very helpfull and have good prices. I enjoy the fire. :D

I would definitely replace it!
You don't want it to weaken & maybe fall out when no one is around, or let CO gas leak into the house at night.
If nothing else, it's just not worth the loss of peace of mind.

(the same thing happened to my Harman TLC two years ago & I didn't want to chance keeping it going. I replaced the glass itself & bought an additional whole new door/window assembly from my Harman dealer. If it happens again, I wont even have to shut down now....I'll just take out 2 hinge pins & replace the whole door

Make sure you use the correct glass too! (It's ceramic based I think....& expensive!)

sometimes they are laminated, if the crack is only on one side or the other (inside/outside), it would still work fine, if it goes all the way thru the glass, definately replace it.
